I ordered a K/S Artisan Naturals & following advice from the JR website selected toppers from DAPW (Luxury Microfibre & Ultimate goose down). I would never think to judge a mattress on its external appearance but I have to say it is stunning. It exudes quality . I had to photograph it before putting on a protector just to remind myself of how lovely it looked on arrival !! I was a little apprehensive as I put everything together & it started to resemble an illustration from 'The Princess & the Pea' but there are not enough superlatives to describe the comfort. Total luxury. This would not be an honest review if I did not mention that there was a small setback when it came to the delivery, but Marie in the office stayed in touch until everything was resolved. The delivery men were very pleasant & helpful.
Problems happen. It is how they are dealt with that is important. This company gives quality customer service. It is a huge leap of faith to buy an expensive mattress over the internet - I fully recommend John Ryan. Jan Rowley
I spent countless hours on John Ryan's site before deciding to purchase a mattress. As you're all aware, these mattresses just aren't cheap. You pay for what you get, and here, you're getting quality.
I ordered a stock-standard 'medium' Artisan 1500 mattress. I was advised to do so, as a healthy, adult male with no ailments to speak of.
The bed arrived and boy, is it heavy! It certainly is solid, and something that is designed to last. However...
1) It is incredibly soft. Whilst it is comfortable, it is far softer than I ever imagined. So much so that if I were to come across this mattress at a store I would certainly never buy it. I ended up mailing John Ryan and asking if I perhaps received a 'soft' one by mistake, and was informed that there is a label on the mattress denoting the firmness. This however wasn't the case; I had indeed received a 'medium' mattress.
I was advised to stick it out for another week or two and unhappy I could return it. I did so, and have become used to the softness. This is something I can live with - I don't have back issues, but equates to 'minus one star' because the softness is far greater than anticipated. Now I understand that 'softness' is completely subjective, but when every single person has the same response - namely "woah, this is really soft!" I imagine that it is just softer than the norm.
2) This is hard to explain, but the top of the bed is not entirely flat; there are 'dipped' areas - completely by design - to give it that classic 'bed' look. I'm not sure of the correct terminology, but if you have a look at any picture of the bed you'll see what I mean. Now this isn't really an issue, and have no problem with the slight dips in the bed. However, what I *do* have a distinct problem with is the fact that the cotton used to achieve this dimple is really hard, and if you're a side-sleeper, you tend to slip in to the dip, resulting in a rather sore hip halfway through the night. It is too hard, and I can feel it through a mattress protector (not a topper, just a protector). This has been my biggest disappointment, and in hindsight, if I had the option of buying the mattress all over again, I'm afraid to say that I simply wouldn't. As such, this is minus another star, and reflects my rating of 3 stars.
It is most unfortunate that I am unhappy with the mattress. This is a fine company, with friendly staff and an absolute wealth of information on their site. I bought into the idea of "you need to sleep on a mattress before you decide" and whilst was given the opportunity to return it, I so badly wanted to like the mattress that I stuck with it.
I wish John Ryan every success in the future, but I remain disappointed with my rather expensive, hip-hurting mattress.
Edit: I have been contacted by John Ryan, and have changed the rating from 3 to 4 stars. They gave me the option to still return to bed, and I have declined this. I think my initial rating of 3 stars was slightly harsh, as this was due to my perception rather than the quality of their beds. A word of warning: if you aren't a heavy person and tend to sleep on your side, make sure that you're aware of tufts in the bed and that these can be uncomfortable.
I would certainly recommend the company; they had no obligation to reply to me, especially since it was entirely my decision to keep the bed past the initial trial period. The fact that they still did speaks wonders of their customer service.
The bed was received more quickly than advised. It was very well protected in transit. It is very comfortable being neither too soft nor too firm. The build quality of the bed is excellent. We are thoroughly satisfied with our purchase and do not anticipate any future problems.
JR are a mine of useful information when it comes to buying a bed - and they are happy and endlessly patient to discuss any questions you may have to guide you towards the right purchase. Lee, whom I dealt with was lovely and saw me through great difficulties on the bed front. Their couriers are reliable and extremely helpful as well and arrived at exactly the time they said they would. It's refreshing to come across a company with such old fashioned values about the way in which a customer is treated and I would heartily recommend anyone thinking of buying a bed to think about buying one from JR. The info provided on their amazing website is an education in itself. I wish this company every success because they really deserve it. Mrs K H - Somerset
We bought an Artisan Naturals kingsize mattress from John Ryan about 3 months ago. Their website really made us think about whether the hassle of spending hours going round shops trying out mattresses was really worth it...and seemed to provide all the information we needed to make our decision right there. We phoned for some advice, placed the order and a few weeks later our beautiful mattress turned up. My husband and I both suffer with back problems and have both had significantly less trouble since our new mattress arrived. Thoroughly recommend the product and the service. Thanks!
We decided to buy online without seeing and/or trying the mattress after reading other reviews. After a telephone call where we were given advice as to the best mattress to suit our needs we committed to purchase and proceeded to do so online. Next day we got a friendly confirmation telephone call to ensure all our details were correct before the order was processed and the mattress was delivered to our home, as promised, within the timeframe we had been told. We are really pleased with our purchase. The mattress is perfect, very comfortable and excellent quality. We couldn't have gotten better even if we had decided to ''try before we buy''. Overall a seamless and professional service and two very satisfied customers.
Not much to say really - from the start of finding the right bed, reading all the helpful information on the website and then finally discussing our exact requirements with the team everything has been very helpful and professional.
They understood our exact requirements, suggested something slighlty different from what we had identified on the website and arranged a delivery date and time (exact time!!) to suit us.
Delivery was great and we have really enjoyed the new bed - the only downside I can think of is why didn't we do this sooner?
Okay, so I'm one of those people who makes complaints, asks to speak to the line manager, writes to MPs regularly....some people call me Mrs Grumpy...I have no complaints with the mattress I bought. I've had it for about a year now. It is the most comfortable bed I've had the pleasure of sleeping on. Now here's the thing....I was going to send the mattress back during the first month or so. The reason for this was that I was still getting back pains, quite bad ones actually. Fortunately my husband loved the bed and insisted that I persevere for a few more weeks. I feel like this mattress has somehow ironed out my spine. I don't have pains when getting up in the morning, I can actually sit on the edge of the bed for hours and type at the PC( bedroom is currently my coding space). Without meaning to gush, I do have to admit that I am thankful for this mattress everyday. I intend to get one for my mother - in - law. FYI. I use this mattress with a metal frame and wooden slats, I have also turned the mattress once.
Like many people, I had a baffling time looking for a new bed until I discovered John Ryan by Design, while searching online trying to find information about mattresses. I loved the website and learnt a lot about mattresses and how they are made, which made me realise that a lot of retailers, even those highly rated by 'Which', don't tell you much at all. I was wary about taking the plunge and buying a mattress I hadn't seen or tried from a company I'd never heard of, but was reassured by the reviews, the integrity of their approach, Marie's advice (who never seemed to tire of my endless questions!) and of course, the 30 day guarantee. I'm really happy with my bed and, although it wasn't cheap, I think it's good value for the quality. I've recommended the company to friends and colleagues.
I did a lot of research before purchasing this artisan naturals mattress and probably paid more than I originally intended to. However you get what you pay for and this is extremely comfortable and comes with a 10 year guarantee. It also compares favourably with products like Vi Sprung which are much more expensive.
Our Vi-Spring mattress and victorian bedstead were getting tired so we wanted a comfortable replacement made from all natural fibres (the idea of sleeping on a plastic sponge certainly didn't attract). We wanted a kingsize but living in a small cottage meant that we really needed a standard length bed (standard king sizes being 3" longer than a traditional double). No problem with John Ryan by Design - we now have a sublimely comfortable and supportive bed that fits perfectly. Delivery was good too - the cottage is 60m from where the van could be parked but the guys carried it all in and assembled it with great humour.
