I moved from Santander because of their despicable customer service and went to First Direct who just do everything perfectly. A £100 joining incentive, a great and quick service. No waiting on on-holds as somebody picks up straight away. Their staff are friendly and genuinely want to help and explain everything transparently. This is the only bank I've ever come across that do things properly and make you feel valued.
You'd be mad not to go with them.
Left Santander after years of cock ups and overdraft charges to come to first direct. Biggest selling point was free overdraft up to £250.
Been with them for over a year now and I can't rate them high enough. Service has always been top quality, singing up to them was easy and their internet banking system is one of the easiest I've used!
I enjoy calling my bank. Not something I've ever said before. Queries dealt with quickly and easily by incredibly friendly staff. Minimalist setup, easy online banking interface, information clearly available on the website, and a cracking regular savings account. So they don't have branches ... Do you really need one? With online banking and an advisor barely two rings of the phone away, I don't think so. I only hope they don't change as they become more popular!
I called them up today just to sort out a transfer of a large amount, that looked like it would take 3 days to clear.
The phone was answered almost instantly, and it's a UK call centre, the person was friendly, gave clear good advice, offered to make the required changes to the payments for me, so they went immediately.
I don't call them often, but am always pleasantly surprised at how good they are.
Always pleasant to deal with and on the one occasion some years ago, when I had a number of automated payments that caused me to go overdrawn, they waived the charges, and sorted the problem out.
I really can't see how they can do any better.
Disgusting rip off
£375 in fees in 6 week period. Obscene charging policy. Discussed it with them and they said 'sorry, but we're sticking with those charges'
Small account that's hardly used that went into overdraft without my knowledge. I 'thought' i had txt messaging notification on it. So i didn't check the account for 6 weeks thinking that I would be informed if it was a problem. Only small amounts coming out of it. A charge happened for each tiny amount that came out. Bang before you know it they are layering charge upon charge upon charge - and loving it.
Yes my mistake for going over drawn. But considering it's a online bank, they hardly bothered to notify me. Oh they sent a couple of non-descript letters, but then i get tons and tons of trash letters so i missed them.
A simple txt message would be cheaper than a letter and more effective. But then they wouldn't be able to rip me off if they made it easy.
Trust me..in a few years there will be yet another massive fine hitting these banks for abusing their position. No other walk of life would such a charging policy be acceptable (apart from Loan sharks that is..they do this sort of stuff..)

After moving away from First Direct to Santander I soon regretted it - Santander were a nightmare and I seem to spend most of my time on the phone listening to music. What a relief to be back with First Direct - normal friendly people answering the phone within seconds, fast efficient and enjoyable doing business with them. At a time when banking has such a bad name, what a relief to find a company that really seems to understand customer service.
I've worked with many banks over the years, but I have never came across a bank like FirstDirect! They are really unique in every aspect and just have the nicest and best customer services. I would (and I do) recommend this bank to everyone I know! As Tina Turner once sung.. SIMPLY THE BEST!
Unlike other call centres you never get the feeling that the person you are speaking to is under pressure to get you off the phone.
They are very efficient, the online system is simple and easy to use and the only time there has ever been a mistake, they were quick to rectify the situation.
