We were with Hostgator from 2006 and paid our hosting monthly.....about 6 months ago I had some difficulty on their site paying monthly so I paid for a full year. $86.00....which in todays economy with so many other hosts I believe is high. We decided to switch to GoDaddy (thank god) and cancelled hosting. They kept sending emails.....why are you leaving, rate us, etc. I had to ask for a refund and then was told I would get a $16.00 refund as they are withholding my extended term discount.....what??? After being with them for so long I guess they just don't care and want your moola.
I moved all my hosting to hostgator a couple of years ago, and I just don't understand some of the comments and negative reviews below. Great pricing, reliable service, and fantastic customer service. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because *some* of their back office stuff is confusing, and sometimes seems to not be consistent in what it does. For example, if I get a new url and then create a subdomain at hostgator, for one site (after everything is set up of course) it should show up as url.com. But the next site, set up the same way, consistently shows up as url.mywebsitename.com useless, and unable to change it.
I have recommend and used HostGator for years. Though since they have been taken over, sites hosted by them have become very slow and there are some strange server-side bugs. Sites would occasionally become unusable slow and are in general a few times slower than other hosts. Also the support, which was great is now very poor and takes much longer to get hold of them.
To give a full review of negative occurrences since they were taken over:
1 - Moved to a different server with no notice and no details of new login information 2 - A server error that led to a 500 response to requests for robots.txt, which caused Google to de-index all the sites on the server 3 - Since the move sites are very slow, sometimes un-useably slow. Load times are about 5 times slower than my new host, at best, and the server will not stream at more than 50Kbps. 4 - Posting of large files stalls on the first attempt. Only works on posting again 5 - E-mails wont send first time. An error message is given and it can take multiple retries to send an email 6 - Support is now much more responsive and take longer to wait for in the queue
used to love this company then they put prices up without telling you then when you complain they basically say tuff. Then even though I had been with them over 4 years wouldnt cancel my contact and still 7 months laters they are still billing me each month!!! They where charging me $80+ per month I know have the same package with another company at £3,95 per month. Total scammers and ripoff merchants.
Hostgator will not enforce their own terms of service. Despite many abuse reports proving TOS violations, they refuse to act and seem to be in fact protecting a hate website.
Reports have included links to images of a naked under age girl being held by a very much older nude male, as well as posts advocating date rape of a 15 year old girl. and others posts showing what look like underage boys engaged in sex acts.
This is potential harm to minors and is a violation of their TOS.
There is also a beastiality image showing a nude male having sex with a decapitated pigs head, again a violation, as their TOS states obscenity is prohibited.
There are many more such posts and images, but Hostgator will not enforce their TOS.
If anyone is thinking of joining Hostgator I would recommend that you look elsewhere first.
Register --> Pay --> first few hours everything is fine. But THEN, they will lock your account, request a copy of your passport, and even if you send the copy via e-mail in minutes after their request and they have action taken on your account, they will NOT unlock your account and even not check your copy of your passport EVEN not after more than 12 hours. You got left with less money in your pocket and their support laughting at you for beeing so dumb to give your money to them.
Im finished with this company, if you need a real cheap and class A hosting company, try http://www.siteground.com/.
Greetings, a REALLY fucked up customer of HostGator.
Hostgator is presenting themselves as a professional company. This is so far from the truth - right now I am their chat support for the 4th hour in a row... not with something complicated simply trying to activate my account.... Oh and by the way I have a tech team waiting on the side getting paid - while Hostgator doesn't do what they are supposed to do... Do not flash your creditcard at this company as they will make your life a living nightmare.
As a bonus half of the time the chat service doesnt work and you are not able to respond to the customer support.
I have used a great many hosting services and eventually been disappointed in all of them, usually due to changes in the terms of service (in mid contract) or bad support. Hostgator really surprised me. They are a mainstream, big time hosting company that has (in my opinion) great customer and tech support. They are what they are - simple enough to say but really, what you see is what you get, no more or less. They do promise unlimited bandwidth and I am sure that there is a catch there but have never been able to test the premise. The cpanel user interface is a bit cluttered but good, not great, it gets the job done. They are generous with space, the shared hosting servers always seem quick and responsive and no downtime that I have experienced. A first rate hosting solution at a fair price.
