I joined the SAA a few years ago and get all of my art requirements from them. They have a really great selection of art materials, plus a 2- monthly magazine with really interesting articles from professional artists and other members.
The SAA is an organisation you should seriously consider joining for all the many benefits to enjoy . It is helpful to both amateur and professional artists. I particularly enjoy articles in the magazine and the prompt delivery of items I buy even though there is no charge for postage.
Always great and polite service from the saa. Everything I get from them is great quality, never any rubbish.
As a matter of principle, and in these times of financial constraint, I frequently refuse to pay the outrageously inflated prices of goods in most art and crafts stores - doubtless their excuse will be the high level of property rents, business rates, salaries, etc. and the fact that many people prefer to shop online. No one wants to see our high streets decimated, so however problematic, councils and private landlords must do some introspection. SAA is my preference for shopping online for two main reasons, art and craft shops are often stacked with inferior quality materials and 'professional' quality stuff is prohibitively expensive. It is usually differentiated by the terms 'student quality' and 'professional quality'. I feel sorry for students because, where paint (whatever medium) is concerned, student quality, i.e. the cheapest, simply means that less primary pigment is used and reduced by increased fillers, therefore it is quite impossible to achieve pure colours, the colour is often just half strength. Synthetic brushes are the cheapest, and the cheapest really just rubbish, they only have a short life before the tip becomes permanently bent or spreads like a floor brush. The best (for example, Kolinsky sable, essential for watercolour) is formidably expensive, but long-lasting. To say nothing about the cost of quality paper.
Students have little financial leeway, even less than professional artists, who themselves find earning a living increasingly difficult. It will often take the income from several jobs (even if one has a market!) to cover a set of new materials. I was therefore happy to find that when I joined SAA I could instantly locate online the finest quality materials at (e.g. Kolinsky sable) literally half the price quoted on the high street. This is how it should be. I can now happily get on with my work.
I've been a member for years and have always been very pleased with any of the products purchased. I also look forward to the Paint magazine for useful tips and interesting articles.
I bought practice paper that is as pleasurable to paint on as 'professional' was at the show, paints at a fraction of many High Street prices, for better quality, and any number of 'bits and pieces' that I could pick and choose, rather than having to buy whole sets for one particular item. It was nice not having to 'make up' to a certain amount in my basket for free P&P, because members get it free whatever the total. Delivery is always within 72 hours, with an email to let you know it's on its way, so you know to have someone in the house.
Plus, you don't get emails every day or so with requests to buy even more stuff, unlike many online retailers; SAA understand that even people who paint and draw every day don't use up everything in one sitting, so I never feel hassled by them.
All in all, definitely worth the membership for the magazines, the discounts on already competitive prices, and stuff regularly turning up in the sale or clearance areas, free lessons each week on the Painting and Drawing channel, forums, exhibition news, and encouragement all the way, SAA gives you everything you need for any project, from equipment and materials, to 'How To' resources, galleries of reference photos and even email help for queries not covered in their extensive reference section and forums.
Really glad I joined, I've had a five star experience from all areas. Definitely join and use this site as one of your main stores.
The SAA is offers support, ideas and materials at excellent value. Their insurance cover is easy to access and comes at a good price. I would recommend anyone interested in taking part in art to join up.
I have never had a bad experience when ordering from SAA, they are always helpful should I need to phone and their online ordering works efficiently every time. Delivery is fast and I have never had a wrong order. Well done SAA!
I have ordered quite a lot from the SAA and have never been let down. It always amazes me how quickly they are despatched and delivered. I usually order on line but on one occasion had to phone and found the staff extremely helpful and my problem solved instantly. I would certainly recommend this company to my friends..
The SAA is brilliant, the service I have received hasbeen excellant, when a parcel went missing they were on the case immeditely and a replacment arrived within a couple of days. I would recommend that anyone with an interest in art join.
Easy to use web site products delivered quickly. Range of products is good to meet a wide range of artist and prices ok too.
Shopping with the SAA is always a pleasure. Not only are the prices fantastic and the postage is free but the choices are vast, along with expert reviews and some video demos to help us decide whether the product is right for us. Thanks to these I have been able to try other media which otherwise I would not have considered.
It's great that everything I need is in the home shop so I don't need to look elsewhere for anything.
May I also say the Paint magazine is better than any other magazine I have seen or read.
Thank you, SAA, for opening up my painting world!
Maggie Lee found this review useful
I have enjoyed the privilege of teaching a small group in the local community and find most of my material through the wonderful SAA catalogue and especially the very helpful magazine Leisure Painter. The articles are inspirational and always useful. When I order anything from the catalogue it always arrives within 24 hours, the staff on the phone are pleasant to deal with and are very efficient if I have any questions. My favourite part of the day is watching Painting & Drawing channel on TV giving great ideas for pictures and hints on technique. I hope you will carry on with this but having watched for at least 5 years now I feel I would like to see some new artists and ideas
(not criticism meant) I still enjoy watching.
I LOVE ORDERING FROM SAA SUCH A GOOD SELECTION OF ART SUPPLIES .
I HAVE NOT BEEN TO A ART SHOP SINCE JOINING I ALWAYS ASK IF THEY COULD USE ROYAL MAIL AS COURIERS TAKE TO LONG HAVE HAD TO WAIT 9 DAYS BEFORE MY ORDER ARRIVED ANN HINDLE
After buying from various places I decided to join the S.A.A.
I suppose I had put off joining because I thought I could buy a lot of materials for £36.
Glad I finally made the decision...good quality materials, good prices, nice helpful staff, and you can save a lot of money off normally expensive items in the sales.
The magazine is very informative and there is a constant flow of encouragement in the
I have Sky TV and watch the painting and drawing channel and have been impressed and motivated by many of the programmes I have watched.
The magazine looks a bit old fashioned and you won't be interested in every article but there's a lot of content and I find some of it relevant to what I'm trying to do. Through the website and magazine there are opportunities to get involved with the society, by showing your work in the gallery for example. Value for money is good: most products cost less through the SAA than in local art shops - and p&p is free!
Ordered one day delivered before breakfast the next, and the person on the phone was both polite and respectful
I think the SAA provide a wonderful service. Their catalogue if packed with just the things that an artist, working in any medium would use. The prices are very good and the free postage is a real bonus.
If yo need to speak to anyone, the staff are helpful and the whole ordering process, on the phone or on line is excellent and usually the ordered items arrive the following day in good packaging.
I have used them ever since I started to paint and there's no other company that provides such quick service.
I came across the SAA as sponsors of the Painting and Drawing Channel and was struck by the fact that they put on so much for free. Eventually I joined the Society and started using the home shop. That was some time ago. Over the years I found the SAA to be an organization which truly supports artists of all levels, and is always looking for new ways to do so.
We have now got Bob Ross added to the catalogue. Far too many artists touting their so and so brush and so and so paint and so and so paper. Please please please can we have less of this. Artists know how to mix their colours without these gimmicks.
On a positive note - I find SAA useful and very efficient service. Many thanks
I bought the folding executive chair, the delivery, price, and quality were excellent.
Unfortunately the lift up shelf was too far back for me with a torn ligament in my
shoulder, so guess what, I sold it to my art teacher who was delighted
Wonderful service. I have ordered lots of times on line and orders always arrives in 2/3 days. Always well packed. Only one order had a couple of things out of stock but they arrived a few days after.
The catalogue has a very large selection over a huge range of products and prices are great. Especially if your a member!
Whenever I have to phone over a query the staff are really helpful and friendly.
I wouldn't buy anywhere else and I am always showing my friends the catalogue and paint magazine.
I love the paint magazine too, always full of good things to read and do. I really enjoy being a member of the society.
Thank you S.A.A.
I have been a member of SAA for several years now and they offer perhaps the most comprehensive range of quality art products and cannot be bettered by anyone.
They carry a full range of artist paints both water-based and oils, pastels, inks, crayons, pencils, charcoal etc. Plus an equally vast selection of paint brushes, an array of different art paper, card, mountboards backed by all the miscellaneous items you may require including paint pots, brush holders and cases, specialist tracing papers, erasers, pencils to name a few. All the range of products is perfectly illustrated in their comprehensive annual catalogue, updated by new product detail when introduced throughout the year.
Additionally SAA sell special DVDs and book compilations teaching one new skills and mediums all by significant leading artists of today. These really inspire you to expand your skills and provide projects which can be followed step by step. These DVD/Books are also detailed in the annual catalogue.
I can only truthfully say service is second to none. I can only recall ordering 1 item that was not immediately ex-stock, although it did arrive within the 7days promised. How they manage such quick deliveries with such a huge stock selection is amazing. Vast majority of orders are shipped the same day as ordered and with you in 1 or 2 days normally. As an SAA member all shipping costs are free, and a price match promise is offerred.
I must also add that as an SAA member you will benefit from their Paint magazine issued bi-monthly, covering both amateur and professional art in all mediums, with plenty "How To" articles, reviews of products, competitions, and tutoring courses through UK and Europe.
A Fantastic Company
When my order arrived damaged I thought "Oh no, here we go again, hassle, hassle, hassle!" but one e-mail and photos of the damaged goods and a sympathetic reply offering to replace the damage goods free of charge along with extra loyalty points was a real surprise. My replacement order arrived the very next day. I was amazed. I find that all my enquiries have been dealt with conscientiously and with a very friendly attitude. Thank you so much SAA.
Lovely to sit and pondered over the brochure without thinking you have to buy straight away. Delivery is so quick, and if not in stock will deliver as soon as possible.
The service I received was excellent. The reason I say this is because I did encounter a problem initially, which meant I had to contact SAA directly. To begin with I thought this was going to be difficult, but no, quite the reverse. I had no trouble contacting them and they answered straight away. They solved my problem extremely quickly and easily; being both polite and helpful. I would not hesitate to contact them again if I had any problems, as I feel confident that their staff will do all they can to help.
I bought some chalk pastels and velour paper and the quality is second to none. The chalks are a delight to work with and a lot better than I have used before, they transfer to the paper with hardly any pressure and go on smooth and almost creamy. I love to work on velour paper as it grabs your chalk and gives a lovely texture to your artwork especially working with animals. I would recommend these items to anyone. I bought them from the SAA and the ordering was easy, the delivery was quite quick but then again I am impatient when waiting for items. I am also going to join the club when I eventually get back to work because the savings you can make are very good but cant afford it at the moment.
I buy all my Paper, Paints, Brushes, and Pastels, not to mention all the bits and pieces that makes producing paintings that you are happy with easy. DVD's, and Books, are readily available and delivered within a very short time, if I need anything for a project I am planning, I would go firstly to SAA, if I cant find what I want, then I would probably re-think what I have in mind.
A set of watercolour brushes was ordered from SAA for my birthday by my husband.
We have had to wait one month for half the brushes to arrive (long past said birthday!) When I rang to complain today, SAA said that they get frustrated with their suppliers. I am the one still waiting for the remainder of the brushes and they have had full payment for all that time. Only thing that SAA suggested was that I return the brushes and await a full refund. Not very satisfactory. Poor service SAA!
