I've wanted a DSLR for many years but never found a persuasive enough excuse to fork out for a half decent one - until this February that is, when my son was born. I decided to use my work bonus to get as good a camera as I could for an as yet undecided budget!
After discussing it with a friend who freelances in London, I decided on a Nikon and as I was new to the DSLR world, I would need at least one lens in addition to the body. I then set to work on the research and trawled various review websites before finally deciding, if I could find it cheap enough, I really wanted a D5300.
The problem with this was that all the UK companies were wanting £600-£700 for the body alone and then £150-£200 for a lens - this was much further than I wanted to stretch myself. Other than the UK based companies, there were two others that came up on searches with seemingly 'to-good-to-be -true' prices; the first of these was the Global Digital Store, which offered a D5300 and twin lens kit (18-55mm & 55-200mm) for a staggeringly cheap £522! Before I got carried away, I thought I'd research the company and was instantly down-heartened to be confronted with wave upon wave of negative "avoid at all costs!" type reviews. Countless stories of DHL delivery men demanding substantial excess duty on the door step, incorrect products being sent out and a non-existent customer services desk completely warned me off using them.
The second company was SLR Hut. Their prices were not quite as low as Global Digital Store, but still in the 'to-good-to-be -true' realm. So this time I checked the company reviews on Trustpilot first and was cautiously optimistic. Even when things didn't go to plan, the reviews were promising, demonstrating an admirable level of customer service. Following some further reviews of lenses, I decided on the D5300 and 18-140mm lens package for c. £580 and placed the order using PayPal (just in case!).
As has been mentioned by others, I was contacted by a John Patrick within 3 hrs of placing the order and after a short, courteous and professional conversation I decided to add an additional battery at a reduced price - checked independently. Again, as mentioned by others, the expectations set regarding delivery were spot on - in fact I believe it arrived earlier advised, which is no bad thing!
Finally, the camera and lens are all I wanted them to be and more and I was even pleasantly surprised to find that the Nikon battery charger was for a UK socket, considering it came from New York State!
Overall I am thoroughly satisfied with my SLR Hut experience and will most definitely recommend them to all and sundry.
I am a journalist, who for several years worked as investigations editor at a regional daily here in the UK. I am not employed by SLRHut or connected with the firm in any way, and have used the firm only once, as a customer. I have been offered a free gift if I post feedback on this site, but I was intending to do that anyway, regardless.
My past experience led me to be highly suspicious about this firm from the outset – the unbelievable cheap prices, the fact that the London ‘office’ is just a forwarding address as the company is based in New York, the ‘odd’ hours of business (New York, not UK time, closed Saturdays), the fear of having to pay import duty on top of the price (I have been stung by this before when I bought from a company in California and did not read the small print properly), the fear that the item would not arrive, and my firm belief that if anything appears too good to be true, it probably is.
However, I searched the internet forums and while several of these fears about SLRHut were also being expressed, nobody had complained that they did not receive their goods.
I called the company on three occasions, and despite my grave doubts, felt surprisingly reassured, as opposed to being “taken in” because of a bargain price. Basically, the policy seems to be to sell camera gear at just above the wholesale price, and the bulk demand makes up for the loss of profit on the normal discounted retail price.
I had set myself a personal budget for upgrading my camera. I have a Pentax K7 and was tempted by the Pentax K3, which has had marvellous reviews, but I could not even contemplate the £1000 price tag for the body only here in the UK. I wanted a camera with a 24MP sensor, and my only alternative was to consider the Nikon D3300, which seems an excellent budget camera, which was half the price of the K3, again here in the UK. The downside from switching from being a lifelong Pentax user to Nikon would mean that I would also have to replace my lenses. You can buy a converter to use Pentax K fit lenses on Nikon, but it involves an extra piece of glass and therefore some loss in quality.
Looking at the comparison websites, the K3 came out on tops every time, although there was much to recommend the D3300.
Having mulled over my dilemma for two weeks, I decided to take a chance on SLRHut, and obtain the K3 body – a dream camera at an unbelievable price, around £600. What swung it for me was the fact that paying by Paypal offered me protection in case my gut instinct that SLRHut were okay guys was wrong. I could also have paid by credit card and had some protection.
I also did a screen shot on my computer of the SLRHut website which clearly states that no extra import duties would be charged, in case I needed it for a potential dispute through Paypal.
Some of the internet forums had expressed concern about SLRHut ringing up to persuade you to buy extra batteries and take out extra warranties. This did happen as soon as I placed my order, but the salesman was polite, not pushy, listed when I said that the K3 would use all the accessories off my K7 including lenses and the spare batteries, and was also amicable when I said I did not want the extra warranty.
The salesman said I would get the camera a week later. He was spot on. DHL tracking was provided, and I watched the camera pass through customs clearance and the various sorting depots in the east Midland sand Birmingham.
The camera arrived. New condition, boxed, everything as it should be, and it worked first time. And there were NO extra import or delivery charges!
I have yet to take the K3 out on an assignment, but cannot at this moment see why there should be anything wrong with it.
In short, SLRHut did everything they promised. I now have a camera that I could never have afforded if I had bought it here in the UK. For many years now, I have been concerned as to how much we in the UK pay for all types of electronic goods compared to our American cousins. I often wish we were in a trade bloc with the USA, not Europe. As I stated earlier, I have had only one dealing with SLRHut, but if my experience on April 2014 is replicated, this company is making a serious contribution to widening the scope of photography so that far more people on a budget can become involved at the higher end.
Would I buy from SLRHut again? Definitely. I cannot afford not to! It will be my first port of call.
Ordered with some anxiety, did not know i was dealing with a American company, they should make this clear on there website, apparently the london address is only a po. box. Good came ok as per delivery instructions, but no warranty card or invoice of sale of purchase which i need. Not impressed overall, coupled with the hard sell, as an email asked to phone them, an American guy answered the phone from the USA and tried to flog me an additional battery coming up with some feeble excuse about the original not being very good. That was not necessary and something i disapprove of , remains to see if i get my warranty card and sale invoice. personally i would not shop with them any more, will keep to the UK much easier to deal with if a problem arrises. There was also a covering letter with the camera, stating if i replied via this review about my experience with SLR Hut they would send me a goody bag, to be that sounds like a bribe, which i find distasteful for a company to use such a practice.
I ordered a camera by telephone and added two memory cards to take advantage of free delivery. The customer service assistant that I spoke to was very friendly and enthusiastic about my purchase and seemed determined to be as helpful as possible.
The prodict arrived within two days through DHL meaning that I could track it all the way to my door.
Overall - excellent service at ultra competitive prices. This is one case where it isn't too good to be true - I wouldn't hesitate in using them again and will always check their website to compare prices.
ill be honest when i was about to buy the from loads of bad reviews from different places and i really didn't want to buy from here but you know what i told the risk and i am 110% happy with the result and got everything within a week. One of the best.
After a lot of reservations placing an overseas order, reading many reviews from this and similar companies, I went with SLRhut for my Nikon D610 purchase. After rectifying my credit card companies security procedures, a couple of calls were made to the 'hut' to advise them. The order went through at around 3pm (BST) on Friday and it arrived at 10:30 am on Monday morning. I paid for 'rush' delivery which is quoted at 3-5 working days so I had expected delivery Tuesday at the earliest given timing of ordering - Result!
Everything was in order and only the fact that camera menus were set to Japanese by default gave any hint of the camera's origins. Easily sorted.
There are some unanswered questions over the extended Warranty something I rarely take up and may be wishing I hadn't on this occasion...
I have just taken delivery of my Canon 6D. Everything arrived on time and perfect condition. Bit worring to start, having to call back and confirm everything but can't complain about delivery or goods. Very happy will use again if necessary.
We were a little bit sceptical about ordering from SLRHut at first having never heard of the site but after a friend vouched for it we decided to purchase a 5D for our business. Delivery was quick and the product is great. Excellent stuff.
As someone new to the industry, this was my first time using SLRhut, having been recommended by a film-maker friend. I have to say I got slightly nervous when I called to check on my order, and had to wait quite a while before the phone was answered. However, I eventually spoke to customer service, and after a further wait, my problem was resolved satisfactorily. I was promised a 3-5 day delivery, but this was missed, albeit narrowly. The service itself was very friendly. Despite some failings, I will probably use the company again, and would recommend it to others.
extremly happy with my purchase of pentaxk3 , great dealing with knowledge people would certainly come back for more equipment in the nere futher , now all i have to do is fathom it all out.thanks again.
SLRHUT was actually my first WOW! experience in online shopping. It was like transacting business with a friend that is closer than a brother. That is what is meant by taking your customers seriously. As for the delivery services, I wonder how they actually pull that off. Hmmm... It definitly won't be long before my next transaction.
I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it all was buying a new camera and lens. The most difficult part of the whole transaction was making a decision as to what to buy. The sales team were very helpful and made some useful suggestions. I was surprised that the camera came from America but was amazed how quickly it got here. Overall a very pleasant experience and I am sure I will buy from SLR again.
I was after a Nikon D3200 camera kit with a basic lense at a competitive price. SLR Hut was able to offer not only the cheapest on the net it also had some stunning bundles at fantastic price. Customer service was very friendly when I called to get an explanation of what was included in the package. The sales person was also able to advise on additional products without being push.
Delivery was super fast. Ordered the camera on Sunday evening and the package arrived via DHL on Wednesday. Goods dispatched from New York and delivered in Hertfordshire (UK).
After looking at the such low price on cameras I was a bit vary of the company and was looking around for reviews of previous customers. Satisfied with what I saw I purchased my dslr and I must say that I had no problems with the order from minute one. Customer service was great and delivery came 3 days earlier than estimated. At the same time I bought my lense on a DIFFERENT website and from the moment I pressed confirm button I had issues with them. My order had been canceled twice and delivery took longer than I expected.
SLRHUT is definitely a place where I will be coming back for my future order and would recommend without hesitation.
I did need to confirm my order by phone them to send the ainvoice and confirm shipment. They despatched my Sony RX100M2 just after I had finished calling them about when will it be despatched. Then after all that DHL were very fast on delivery for USA to UK. In 2 days! 5 days from click buy now. Fast. & they have pretty good prices saved £100+ on the Sony RX100 M2.
Ordered the camera and it came within the week, although the estimated time was two. Also helpful how they called to check I knew I was buy a body-only. Would recommend to anyone, will be buying from here in the future.
Not only was the camera I wanted cheaper with slrhut than anywhere else I searched the service was prompt and courteous. In terms of deliveryI cannot fault the speed with which the camera was delivered, I would definitely buy from slrhut again.
