I have been moving and/or converting currency between the UK, France and Bulgaria for years and have always resented the hefty charges made by the banks, either in commission or by unfavourable exchange rates or both. A private arrangement with a trusted friend worked reasonable well but depended on him wanting to sell euros at the same time I wanted to buy them and involved him posting me a cheque drawn on his bank in France, me signing it on the back and then me posting it to my bank in France. The cost of stamps was much less than the banks would have taken to convert and transfer the money but the procedure was somewhat slow and cumbersome. The online Transferwise process is much quicker and simpler (and probably more secure) than my private arrangement and the low cost compares well.
