We booked Argus Car Hire for our honeymoon this year and when we got to the airport we were told they would need our card details on file for security, fair enough, except the lady who took the card went ahead and 'froze' 950 Euros from our account despite my asking them 'You're not taking any money now right?'
I told her that would mean we couldn't pay for our hotel let alone enjoy our stay and I was told the money would be refunded the next day if I didn't take the car. We had no choice but to take a 50 Euro taxi to our hotel. The next day things took a turn for the worse, I had emailed Argus and my bank and Argus Car Hire and the woman at the airport DENIED taking the money at all, meaning that the money would remain frozen for ten days. It was only when I sent Argus copies of the emails my bank had sent confirming they had taken the money that they accepted responsibility however they then made out that they were doing everything they could, very quickly changing their tune! That said the money still didn't go back into our bank until we were back in the UK.
Argus Car Hire truly are the most disgusting company I have ever come across, they had no sympathy and were impossible to deal with despite the fact that we were on our honeymoon and we hadn't even taken the car! We had to arrange new flights home 3 days early as we couldn't afford to stay in Portugal .
I'd urge anyone reading this NOT TO BOOK. Even queueing for the car I had a bad feeling picking it up from a makeshift shack in the furthest car park. People ahead of me were complaining and being sent to their cars which were on the other side of the car park (The unhelpful lady informed them there were 'A few scratches and dents' so I think it's safe to assume Argus took a good chunk out of their 'Frozen' Money before returning it!)
Worst. Company. Ever.
