My husband and I hired a car when we were in Austria. We paid for the car fully in advance and when we got to the airport we handed our card over to for the security deposit.
3 days later we returned the car in mint condition with a full tank of petrol as stated in the T&Cs.
When I got home I went to take money out of my account and only then did I realise that you had taken £625.00 out of my account on the day we picked the car up!!!! I thought money would only be taken if we had caused damage to the car not before we had even got in it!!!
It toke me 5 phones and then I had to wait 5 working days for the funds to returned into my account!!!!
It states in your t&Cs that Debit cards will not be excepted well that's what i gave the man over the counter at the airport and he toke it with no problems.
NOT EVERYONE has CREDIT CARDS and therefore if you decide to take a debit card it would be nice to know that your taking money straight away (instead of and imprint) and that it WILL take 5 lengthy phone calls and 5 working days for money to come back into my account.
No issues on collection or return. Winter tyres and snow chains included. Clean car in good order and competitive price. Would use again
The list of what has gone wrong with our 12 day hire is rather long, but to summarise:
- we paid for a 4 door car and was given 2 door at the location
- Auto-Europe confirmed at two occasions prior to the hire that the car
will be 4 door, yet it was not
- The car was dangerous to drive, the front tires illegal
- The car was in poor state, very dirty, one of the tyres missing the cap trim
- As the tyres were worn and unbalanced, the car was developing very sharp shaking at speeds over 95 Km/h (60 miles/h) making it dangerous to drive on the motorway
- the millage was 73,544 km on the clock at the time of taking the hire
- We were not offered the right car at any time, as their representative told us "it's a busy season and this car is the only one available. Take it or leave it!" and if they do get more appropriate car to what we paid for, they will let us know. They never did!
Our complaint to AutoEurope was ignored for 3 months to finally get their response and be offered as they said: "as a good will gesture", £15 voucher of the next rental !!!!!!
AVOID them like a plague, I believe this is an organised scam and they should be put out of business. I will be taking this further with our Credit Card company and possibly to court for not providing the service they took money for, as well as endangering lives of my 2 small children, my wife and myself.
Auto Europe appear give the cheapest quotes, but hide many fees (premium location surcharge, VAT, vehicle registration recovery fee etc.) behind a popup in tiny lettering at the time of booking, leading to a fair sting on collection.
Fair enough, I should have read the fine print, but its clearly engineered this way to get bookings. All fine and legal, but its left a bitter taste - I will go elsewhere next time.
I cannot thank Auto-Europe enough for their excellent Sales Support and for placing our Rental Car with National at Houston Airport. Both were a joy to deal with and I must say, the car we had, infact every car we saw on the lot, looked like it had just come out of the showroom. Infact thinking about it, we put more miles on the clock driving it to Tampa, than it had when we picked it up. Simple straight forward deal and the way we were dealt with by both companies was nothing but excellent.
Will most certainly use both Auto-Europe and National again ....... Thank you
Very easy to find in terminal, very quick to get car. Car as expected from booking. Car in good condition. Easy bus journey to car parks both directions. SatNav included without extra cost. All round great service.
we picked up our car at Aarhus Airport Denmark, but were amazed to find that they wanted 650 Kroner deposit (nearly £800) which was taken from my husbands account. The car was perfect and really good value for money but i just wonder what would have happened if we hadnt had a card on us that we could afford to pay £800 on. When we got home Europcar sent me an email saying they couldnt put the money back into my account without sending account details. I have hired cars at Aarhus airport before and have never come across this. The money eventually went back into my account. The only complaint I had was the huge deposit we had to pay.
We hired a Kia which was comfortable enough for 4 people sightseeing around the Avignon / Nimes /Arles area of France. Pick-up and deposit at Avignon TGV station was efficient and staff were friendly/helpful.
Firstly our car was smaller than we were expecting and the boot wasn't big enough to hold our luggage - I'm still not convinced Hertz gave us a car in the category we booked. Even if they did it was low season and their car park was full of cars , so it would have been no big deal for them to give us another car if they wanted. The big shock was the extortionate cost of the payment to protect our excess waiver - we were quoted c. 130E for just 4days on top of the actual booking payment. I'd recently been to Ireland and the insurance payment with another hire company was a fraction of the cost Hertz were charging in Sardinia. We declined Hertz's insurance and instead used icarhireinsurance.com
So overall feel a bit let down by the actual quality of car/service we got.
The VW Golf car I reserved was not avialble as the Europcar ZURICH airport male receptionist claimed when I went to collect our rental car on Sunday evening
However in their parking bays we saw at least two VW Golf available to rent in their bays? As I am firmilar with the VW golf was better for me than apparising myself of the driver controls and dashboard of the Skoda Estate 1.4 TSI which was offered to us at the Europcar reception desk?
I really like Auto-Europe as their prices are always very competitive, and you know which rental company the car will be coming from - unlike other agencies. Free cancellation is an added bonus, in case you need it.
Thoroughly delighted with service from Auto Europe when we collected our car from Belfast City Airport.
We were slightly early and the young man on reception offered us a higher spec model for slightly more money.
The car had just been washed and hovered out and did the trick.
Would recommend them to anyone and will use them again.
Arrived at Europecar desk Faro airport early morning but person at counter broad smile everything explained clearly took the option of the automatic toll paying machine the person checking the car out in the yard a bit at sixes and sevens but this was very early in the morning all went well the car is returned to a different location outside the airport but again very efficient and transported by minibus to terminal building in plenty of time to catch flight home so Auto Europe well done again you have come up trumps all the cars we have booked from you over the years never been disappointed.
Efficient service at Geneva airport, with the bonus of a free upgrade from an economy hatchback to a Golf cabriolet. We had great weather during our week in France and were able to take advantage of the very quick and quiet soft top.
I have been satisfy with the service from Auto Europe and would recommend it to a friend.
This was a Europcar for two weeks in the Algarve. Take very special care when taking Europcare insurance. The cost was more than the hire of the car. Also beware of the way in which Europcar charge for the use of the toll equipment in the car plus the toll fees. Although, it is not essential to use the toll road.
having not known auto europe was tied in with national and enterprise my experience was a better bigger car although slightly not at the full fuel mark everything from the lady at the desk in Belfast whom was wonderfull i am delighted to recommend to anyone great service and first class customer care and handling .
Liked the transparent way you showed not only prices, but also who the Car Hirer Companies were who were offering those prices.
We have hired cars all over the World, and it is our experience and that of freinds, that some Car Hire Companies are to be avoided at all costs
Your prices were reasonable, and we chose to pay a little more for a larger and more comfortable car (a Mercedes) rather than a more normal compact hatchback.
We took advantage of your excess refund policy, but found out after we had finished the hire, that we had completely misunderstood YOUR CONCEPT of REFUND.
We had thought it was a special offer, on offer at the time to encourage booking, and belived that it rewarded careful driving, and if no claim was made we would be refunded the payment made.
Clearly this is not the case, and it is another added word for collision damage excess insurance cover, which you are automatically offered at point of collection.
We think you should delete the word REFUND as it could confuse others, as it did us.
We did write to inform you of the reason for our confusion, but you reply sadly was simply dismissive.
We had the normal wait at check in (over an hour) due to too few staff at the counter.
Why do companies do this (Hertz this time) when they know in advance how many cars are due to be collected at pre arranged times.
Also our own usual pre vehicle check showed 8 small areas of damage to the car, not just the one shown on paperwork, which caused further delay as paperwork then had to be changed to reflect such (again it seems a regular hazard when hiring a car from all Companies)
We liked the fuel policy of collect full return full, which is how it should, be rather than the scam practised by others of collect full return empty.
Yes we would book with you again.
But why is Car hire always so complex, frustrating, time consuming and stressfull with all of the waiting at check in (paperwork alone can take 20 mins)
Returns can also take an age on occassion, although this time was speedy.
The company is NOT suitable for anyone outside the UK. But they don't make this clear on their literature. I arrived in Belfast after a lengthy trip from Atlanta and a connection in London to be told by National Car Rental they wouldn't release the car to me because they don't accept my US driving license and won't accept my UK driving license without the paper counterpart. This wasn't what I wanted to hear late at night and jet-lagged in strange city.
In spite of not getting to rent the car, and not having been advised of the documentation that would be needed at the time of booking, I was charged full price by Auto-Europe for the rental I couldn't use. When I complained they hid behind the small-print in their T&Cs and kept my money.
Auto-Europe is a dishonest company and I would recommend you avoid them.
As an agency organising hire cars for overseas trips, this has worked very well.
The documentation was clear, and readily accepted by Hertz the hirer. The service there was excellent both on the collection and return.
I did think that although the rental itself was excellent value, that the excess was far too high at 1500 Euros, and the charge made to remove the excess was more than 60% of the hire charge. Too much by far.
Next time I hire a car, I will be looking closely at the excess required and the additional cost of removing it. It is this area in which a lot of progress is needed and with the experience behind us now, we will know what to look for on future rentals
No problems receiving or returning the car but was a little worried when the car was not bodywork checked on return whilst we were at the desk as any type of incident could have occurred in the parking area for which we would have been blamed.
Other European car hire companies have checked over the car with the customer at the time of return. This gives the customer peace of mind.
The car I hired was fine and the price reasonable but I was disappointed that the convertible I had ordered was not available on the day and i was delayed at the airport whilst this was sorted. I was also very irritated that I was obliged to take part in the scam which provides a full expensive tank of fuel at the start and you then return it empty. No choice at all in the matter. This will stop me from using site again.
I always use Auto-Europe - they're always competitive, they integrate seamlessly with the renters (provided you remember to print your voucher - don't forget this!), and I've never had any issues with damage. They also allow you to drop off in a different location to where you collect, which is important for me. Thanks guys!
Booking service very efficient, clear and carefree.
Documentation on line clear and correct.
My only dissappointment came when the car company allocated created a massive delay for me to pickup the car.
This day and age should enable the vehicle to be issued within 15 minutes. (not Hertz.)
The upgraded vehicle unfortunately wouldn't start a technician helped me obtain another without having to queue again. Once on the road I felt totally happy with the car.
I dropped it off at the airport with minimum fuss. Good value product and service.
We chose Auto Europe because they seemed to give more policy options. We went for the option of hiring the car with a full tank of fuel and returning it full; this worked well for us because we weren't planning on driving too far and so weren't sure if we'd get use out a full tank. We also took out the option of the full excess refund which gave us peace of mind. Otherwise we'd have been liable for the first £1000 of any claims we made.
We were very happy with the car we hired. No problems with it all.
Why can't we supply driver's licence details on booking to speed up collection process.
Fuel full on collection - likewise on drop-off. However Sardinian pumps are not manned, won't take cards and are likely to eat €20 notes without supplying fuel. You need to practice before an early morning return.
We booked car through Auto Europe and paid the excess refund cover. We flew to Naples where it was very confusing trying to find the car hire (Hertz) after queing in the hot sun we were taken in a minibus about 200m to a carpark where we had to stand in the hot sun for an hour then the woman at Hertz gave us a very complicated story about how we needed extra car insurance not included in the original price we had paid. We signed a form to get the car but not given a copy. When we were back in the UK we were billed for 376 euros for an optional super cover insurance plus other charges for "car charge" and "location charge". This almost doubled the cost of the car hire. AutoEurope's help desk in Portland,USA were not very helpfull and told me that I had to request a copy of any forms at the time and unless I had written evidence that we were miss-sold the insurance there was nothing they could do.
Auito Europe may seem cheaper at first but beware of all the hidden charges. And do not use Hertz at Naples Airport.
We have traveled around Europe, Germany, Austria, France and many more never had a problem with hiring a car, Arrived at Firefly desk booked by Auto Europe in Italy Naples airport with a 5 & 6 Year old and then stated by saying at the Hertz desk that no body works on a Sunday for Firefly and that they were dealing with the bookings. When I handed over the booking reference and my driving license and by Visa card they straight away said you cant have the car you have to have credit card. They then said that it was Italian Law until they decided they wanted to charge us 500 Euros to use Hertz instead and then they could use our Visa debit card. When we said that we would come back tomorrow they said that Firefly wont be there that they will refund us the original money but we had to pay the 500 euros. I tried to get them to give me documentation but they said that they cannot get hold of Firefly on the number and the internet. By this time my children had nothing to eat or drink and were getting distressed, they just laughed cut a long story short it was my brother wedding and they would not even accept his card as it had to be in my name even through we share the same surname they did not want to help so we had to pay for another car, but at least we would get a refund for the first car, when we returned to the UK sent emails to Auto Europe and they keep saying that just because I booked with this card it is on there T&C and therefore will not refund me I have never been so horrified in my life I would never use then and me and my partner book work in hotels in UK and would tell anyone never to use such as bad company.
Like many on this site I chose autoeurope for a trip to Pisa, Italy recently and was very dissapointed with the hidden costs which ended up doubling the cost of my initial rental. To make matters worse the customer service from their Pisa supplier Goldcar was horrific, we were fiercely given the option of paying up for the extras or leaving without a car at 9pm at night. I paid the extra costs, thinking I would appeal to Autoeurope once back in the UK. Only to be highly dissapointed again by a 'you should have read your contract' response that took three weeks to arrive. Yes sure, I should have sat down and read through with a fine tooth comb - and will next time - but surely there has to an element of customer service, and an ethical if not legal obligation to be upfront about costs? I would avoid autoeurope, there are a number of rental car companies out there who value their customers, make sure you choose them!
