We have traveled around Europe, Germany, Austria, France and many more never had a problem with hiring a car, Arrived at Firefly desk booked by Auto Europe in Italy Naples airport with a 5 & 6 Year old and then stated by saying at the Hertz desk that no body works on a Sunday for Firefly and that they were dealing with the bookings. When I handed over the booking reference and my driving license and by Visa card they straight away said you cant have the car you have to have credit card. They then said that it was Italian Law until they decided they wanted to charge us 500 Euros to use Hertz instead and then they could use our Visa debit card. When we said that we would come back tomorrow they said that Firefly wont be there that they will refund us the original money but we had to pay the 500 euros. I tried to get them to give me documentation but they said that they cannot get hold of Firefly on the number and the internet. By this time my children had nothing to eat or drink and were getting distressed, they just laughed cut a long story short it was my brother wedding and they would not even accept his card as it had to be in my name even through we share the same surname they did not want to help so we had to pay for another car, but at least we would get a refund for the first car, when we returned to the UK sent emails to Auto Europe and they keep saying that just because I booked with this card it is on there T&C and therefore will not refund me I have never been so horrified in my life I would never use then and me and my partner book work in hotels in UK and would tell anyone never to use such as bad company.
Like many on this site I chose autoeurope for a trip to Pisa, Italy recently and was very dissapointed with the hidden costs which ended up doubling the cost of my initial rental. To make matters worse the customer service from their Pisa supplier Goldcar was horrific, we were fiercely given the option of paying up for the extras or leaving without a car at 9pm at night. I paid the extra costs, thinking I would appeal to Autoeurope once back in the UK. Only to be highly dissapointed again by a 'you should have read your contract' response that took three weeks to arrive. Yes sure, I should have sat down and read through with a fine tooth comb - and will next time - but surely there has to an element of customer service, and an ethical if not legal obligation to be upfront about costs? I would avoid autoeurope, there are a number of rental car companies out there who value their customers, make sure you choose them!
I used Auto Europe to hire a car on a holiday I have just arrived back from. After getting fleeced at the airport on collection of the car I felt the need to make my feelings known so others may avoid the issues I experienced.
Original quote - £126.06 (This included their excess refund cover, which means you can claim back the excess should you have to pay in the event of an accident)
- They don't make clear that the excess refund cover is only valid on a very basic form of insurance.
- Full tank of petrol (€85) - have to pay for a full tank of petrol on collection. We only used a third of the tank. No refund is given.
- You can't pay for the basic insurance with a visa debit card - only a credit card. So had to take out the full insurance - an extra €150, non-refundable.
So instead of the quoted £126.06 I ended up paying £322.67 - TOTAL CON
AVOID THIS COMPANY - SO MANY HIDDEN COSTS
I used Auto Europe for the first time this summer for a point-to point rental in Switzerland and received the same high standard of service as if I had rented directly with the car hire company, in this case Europcar/National. The price comparisons were clear and extras and insurance excess were clearly explained. I will be using them again when travelling in mainland Europe.
Staff were friendly and efficent at both pick up and drop off. No complaints or issues arising.
The car supplied was clapped out. The wine from the transmission made me apprehensive that the car would give up before I was able to return it.
To cap it all, I now find an unexplained debit of £18 on my card
I doubt I shall use Hertz again
I ordered a Golf Plus and was given a Skoda Fabia estate which I didn't personally feel was an equivalent car but it did the job. I'm not anti Skoda!
Also I ordered a stage 2 child seat and whilst available no explanation of cost or fitting was provided. I was told to 'take one from the pile'. On return I had to specifically ask for the cost and was eventually given a price of 70 Swiss Francs for FIVE days, so think £10 a day which seems expensive since they were all cheap models and only cost about £80 to buy new in the UK!
Firstly I was given a car which had brake lights on all the time, this was sorted without an issues, but only after I had drove 10 miles away from the airport and had to to return when the police stopped me.
I booked through auto-europe but when I arrived at Europe Car I was charged extra for young drivers fee which I was aware would happen but they didn't tell me the excess waver which I paid for was declined and I would have to pay the full excess if I had a accident this was in small print at the bottom of my paper work. (yet I was still charged for it). Due to this they had taken a pending payment of £733.00 which then made my card unusable for the rest of my trip as the money that was on it was for my hotel but I had to use a different card as the payment Europe car took without my knowledge took me up to my credit limit all without telling me this was going to happen I only found out when I my card was declined.
We would never use Auto Europe or Hertz again. When we arrived at Salzburg Airport Hertz desk we were met with the news that we would have to have £1400.00 put on hold as a deposit before we would be allowed to take the car we had hired. The cost of hiring the car was £392.42 so this was over three times the cost of the actual hire. That was our holiday budget so there was no way we could afford that and have our holiday. We were told that to lower the price we would have to buy a complete package of insurance. We thought we had already done that through Auto Europe, including Excess Refund Cover, so we were extremely angry to be told that the only way we would get a car was by buying it again. Apparently, Hertz take the minimum excess + fuel + VAT - I don't know what the tax rate is in Austria but the car could be filled with diesel for approximately EUR 100, so we immediately felt that we were being overcharged. We phoned Auto Europe but the person we spoke to had no meaningful advice to give us so we were left on our own to work out a solution. We eventually agreed to buy the insurance at a cost of EUR 144 so that we could get the amount blocked down to a more manageable, but no less expensive, £700, just so we could have a car to use for our holiday.
We have used car hire many times in America, and also European countries such as Spain and Portugal, Ireland and Northern Ireland and have never had any money put on hold, even for cars of a greater value and for longer periods of time then the one we had in Austria. On occasion we have had to pay a refundable deposit but only of approximately £200.
Because we felt so distrustful of the treatment we would receive from Hertz, when we returned the car, we felt compelled to take photo's of it from all sides and also the dials showing that the tank was full at the time of return. This was to make sure that they could not keep the money they had blocked.
As I have said above - we will never use either company again.
I have been coming to Copenhagen for close on 35 years, and 5 times/year,always renting cars for the duration of my stays.
Since I have been using Auto Europe,I have really found great value for money, and as long as things remain the same in the future, am highly unlikely to ever change.
Auto Europe is a trustworthy car hire broker. Either the best, or among the best, price and clear terms and conditions. This is particularly useful when comparing the cost of additional drivers, for example.
Car hire is a potential minefield - intentionally confusing, in my opinion. But I feel re-assured about using Auto Europe. Hope it continues to provide this good service.
Having been awake since 2am, tired and pregnant I was looking forward to my rental car. I have a summer home in italy and have never had a problem when renting a car. I was treated very badly, rudely with zero customer service at the rentsl company. I was told that my card, which is a visa debit, could not be used. I have always used this with rentals in Italy and with prepaid sites like auto. I also had confirmation before booking that it was accepted. I had a very difficult journey home with heavy luggage and very costly. If you are a pregnant lady alone I would advise you not to use this company. I have had zero apologies or contact from this company and I have not been refunded my rental cost.
If you are a pregnant lady trave
They said Mercedes C Class or Similar. There is no way a French car from a failing manufacturer is similar to a German luxury brand. I note they don't advertise it as a Citeron DFS or similar. We arrived to a long queue at the Herz counter, had to queue again outside to get he keys and then they told us the car wasn't ready. So we had to wait another 20 minutes. The car they gave us hadn't even been cleaned. The automatic gear changes were jerky and the stop/start engine technology almost got us in an accident at a roundabout as the engine switch off just as we tried to acelerate into the stream of traffic.
it was great to have a mercedes C on our 11 days holidays in the south of France. It was £300 for unlimited mileage and a GPS. It held 2 big bags, a medium suitcase and 2 cabin sutcases. Driving in the South of France can be a little difficult with narrow roads and stop and go traffic so having an automatic was great!
all in all you only have to pay for the tax once you get your car and if you decide to have a last minute 2nd driver they charged us £32 in all.
Prices offered on auto europe were less than the main auro rentals. The service was fast and efficient, signing up was easy and so was monitoring the progress of my order. In the end, even the car I got was better than expected. Quality.
As an independant business traveller its important to have a fast, easy reliable way of booking transport and travel. Auto Europe has exceeded my expectations. Ive used the site twice now and not only was it a very user friendly and painless experience, the cost savings are great. I wish i knew about the site before!!!!
My only suggestion (its not a criticism as the site is easy), is that it would be good for some of the data to be taken from the user details after logon to make it even easier and faster to book cars.
Website clear and concise with lots of choice. Got the car I booked, but in my opinion the boot was a bit smaller than advertised. Already booked a car with Auto-Europe for trip to USA.
My son and I picked up matching Puntos at Pise Airport.
We were served without having to queue and with a minimum of fuss. The cars were Fiat Puntos, almost brand new. They were great to drive around Italy in.
On dropping off the cars back at the airport, the procedure was well organised and took less than 5 mins.
Would fully recommend this company
Hired VW Polo for one week no problem with car.
When I booked and paid for car I was told that was the final payment.
I was assured that I would not have to pay 500 Euros security deposit .(for what ?)
This is an issue which has cropped up on Trip adviser several times with hire companies at Faro Airport..
Guess what I nice smooth talking lady informed me I had to pay this deposit.
before she would release the car. I travel frequently to Spain and other EU countries and never had to comply with this request.
Very disappointed in Euro car their staff could not care less once again the customer is made to pay.
Last time I will use this Hire company.
Booking was fine and the procedure to get the car was fine. Best to walk from Pisa airport to the car rental zone as long long q for the shuttle bus. Car was from hertz and all went smoothly. Do check the car more thoroughly than I did as the 12v socket did not work so could not use my sat nav. One licence plate bulb was broken. Staff were oblivious to this and ignored my comments upon return
You're really booking with Hertz. Our family of 6 - four young children - hired a car for a fortnight brake in Italy. The excess on the insurance policy is so massive as to make the policy all but useless. If you have a bump - and remember you're in Italy where people bumping you is as common as pickpockets - you pay the first £1,700.00! You come under pressure on arrival to pay an extra £600.00 for a fully comprehensive policy. It's as close to a rip off as you'll come by. Check your terms and shop around.
Great service, fast and efficient picking up and dropping off of the car, with friendly staff.
Pleasantly surprised at how good this was. Auto-Europe placed us with a big name car-hire company at a BIG discount compared to booking direct. - The car-hire was perfect and Auto-Europe's detailed on-line advice was excellent. - Very pleased.
Auto Europe was the best offer for Car Hire in Edmonton. The car hire company involved accepted the documentation without hesitation and all the data was correct. Only negative is maybe that you have to pay up when placing the reservation and not the moment you receive the car.
Car was a Fiat Punto which was already well used and very scratched all over the body work. Hire firm wanted 500 GBP as a deposit and this actually was taken from my account there and then. Next i was charged 92 Euros for the tank of fuel. Now then, in the UK i have an Audi A4 which takes 95 GBP to fill from empty. How therefore can a small car such as a Fiat Punto take so much fuel??(over inflated fuel prices i think)
Then to top it all, the sales agent tried to sell me further insurance at 18 Euros per day. I showed her an insurance document that i had taken up to cover such an insurance to which she basicaly told me that it would not cover their further insurance.
I have returned the car after two weeks in an acceptable condition and the person recieving at the hire company signed off the hire forms. When i asked if my deposit would be returned, they said that it would be refunded in due course when the computer updated the hire agreement. That was on Friday 16 August at 1700 hrs. To date i have had no such refund of deposit. Not very happy and would not hire again with this company.
Hired from Pisa for 16 days and instead of the Fiat Panda booked I was given a Fiat 500. Ideal car for the narrow Tuscan mountain roads....and you can park it almost anywhere Will use the services of Auto Europe again next time I hire
Not happy with the car i was given by Hearts,it was all damaged and i was charged £140 more as the car I booked and paid was not available.
This is what happened i forgot to inform my bank that i was going on holiday to activate my credit card on my arrival, i asked the company if i could use the Visa debit card but i was denied to use it,unfortunately the bank was closed and i had to wait till the next day to activate it ,i had to pay for a taxi to take me to my hotel which was not cheap and the next day i got a taxi again but only after i called my bank to activate my credit card when i arrived at the airport to collect the car from Hearts the "gentleman"behind the reception informed me that the car i payed in advanced was not there.I had no option but to pay more money to get a car.Yes the car i got was Diesel and five door but was damaged in 5 places.
One of my relations arrived two days later and managed to get a car from the same agency with the Visa debit card!!!!Not happy
I have used Auto Europa often, and in general have been completely satisfied. On this occasion, though, it was quite difficult to hire a car for the two days in August we needed. First, to judge from the online enquiry, only one rental company in Lecce had any cars at all for the relevant days (Hertz). Second, the Hertz downtown office is at an address which is not on Google maps (or similar) or any maps that we could find in the city. Third, the office, once found, was under-manned, for a Saturday morning, with one man dealing with returns and only one with new business. The tiny office was crowded at both times when we had to be there, and they even resorted to locking the doors to keep customers out. Having said that, the car was fine, probably a slight up-grade from what I had ordered, and reasonably priced.
The collection was very easy and the baby seat was ready for us to use. The car, a Nissan Quashqai+2, was comfortable and easy to drive with the rear view camera a great help for parking. Dropping it off was straight forward and was a fuss free end to the holiday.
