I recently booked a hire car with Hertz, through "CarDelMar" on the 17th of August 2013.
I booked the car for 5 days during my time in Italy, for pick up at Rome international airport - from the 19th till the 25th of August.
When I was booking the car through "CarDelMar" I was specifically prompted to enter my birth date to confirm my age, and required me to book the car under my credit card, which is required to identify the driver of the vehicle upon pick up.
Upon arriving at the Hertz desk at Rome international airport, I was told I was unable to actually pick up the car as I did not meet the minimum age of 23 under Italian Hertz procedures.
The Hertz representatives assured me that I would be issued a full refund, as the website should not have allowed me to book the car after I had specified that I was in fact under the age of 23 years old. and confirmed that I was the intended driver with my credit card.
(The Official Hertz website would not have allowed me to proceed with the booking upon stating my age)
I have since been in contact with "CarDelMar", and they have been extremely vague and unhelpful with the situation. I find it grossly misleading and deceptive that I was allowed to book the car under my name, when they had full knowledge that I would in fact not be able to actually hire the car after I had specifically stated that I was the intended driver, confirming it with my credit card.
Your service was excellent - that of Hertz was less so. On collecting the car it was dirty and had no water in the screen wash. After 3 days at 19.00 in remote Iceland the AWD warning light came on. We found a garage who said there was an electrical problem that they temporarily rectified but suggested we phone Hertz. We paid them 2000 krone. We phoned Hertz who said to ignore the warnings light as it was a common fault with the Rav 4.
Two days later we got an oil warning - as instructed we ignored it. Hower as it persisted we checked the oil to find there was literally no engine oil. We bought oil at 3800 krone.
On returning the car Hertz said they would make enquiries but gave no apologies. I am awaiting reimbursement of our costs, but am not holding my breath !
I am a regular customer of Hertz but when I looked online to rent a car in Iceland, I was surprised to see that they wanted approximately £550 for a compact car!! I went through Car Del Mar and got exactly the same car for £386.00!! All I had to do was to report to the Hertz desk on arrival and collect the car. All very easy and I will certainly use Car Del Mar again!
Had no issues with the hire or at the airport. The actual hire was with Avis they were much higher priced via their own website. So better to use CarDelMar which gets same car at cheaper prices. Also got a free 2x category upgrade at the airport so very pleased
CarDelMar found a good deal with Avis. They also changed my start day without too much hassle (my flight went earlier than expected).
PROBLEM: I opted for Excess cover on the CarDelMar website but the payment for it failed (although payment for car was OK). I therefore used another Excess insurance provider (Questor). However, when I arrived at Avis they insisted I pay a £2500 deposit because I didn't use their cover. They'd only accept on a credit card but I only had a debit card which they wouldn't accept. I was forced to take out Avis's own cover @ £25/day! Avis covered everything but NOT the car key (outrageous!).
So, beware of the hire car company rules when you take out cover from other companies like CarDelMar/Questor. CarDelMar should have made these issues clearer to me before my journey rather than leave it to the small print ;0\
Everything went fine with our rental, apart fro one thing.
There was an out of hours charge of £23 + VAT. the "+VAT" bit was not mentioned anywhere in ther voucher.
Even the fact that there would have been a charge was not made clear. It should have been included in the quoted price. As it was there were alternatives that would have been cheaper, had the charge been taken into account.
Not a clear pricing policy from CarDelMar, so buyer be aware.
Was told car had 1/4 tank of petrol.
When we got to fuel station across the road the low fuel warning light was on.
Ended up putting too much in on return journey.
They end up gaining every time.
Full to Full is so much fairer.
Apart from that all went well.
Pick up from airport and drive to hire shop worked well.
I booked to collect my car at the airport terminal but had to wait outside in the car park for an hour in nearly 40 degress of heat for a courtesy car to take me to an off site collection point, where I was given a smaller automatic petrol car instead of the larger manual diesel car that I has paid for, and then I was charged 75 euros for petrol (which later only cost 47 euros to fill up) although my agreed policy was a full/full fuel policy but Hertz told me they never operated that policy. I wasn't impressed!
On arrival we did not see any Hertz desk and made our way to the pick up bay via asking taxi drivers.
The pick up was a lucky fluke as the company Avis directly next door to the main Hertz office had to pick other passengers up and kindly drive us there as well (2 adults 2 children aged 8).
I would like to note that initially we are to blame as well because we didn't turn to our right after arrival into airport. We followed pick up signs guiding us left.
The car that we got was not the car I wanted.
I realise that the vehicle fell into the same category but I especially went for Car Del Mar due to the Ford Focus package.
We got a Mitsubishi Colt.
Regardless. It drove well. Economical. And served us well throughout the 2 weeks.
Value for money it was.
I didn't much like the procedures of insurance fees and fuel charges but that's the way it is with the majority of company's.
Staff were friendly, helpful and I found comfort in speaking to.
On the wider scale and bigger picture I feel lucky & blessed that we got what we got and were able to do what we wanted to do.
So, I thank you.
I found the online booking service very user-friendly. The quotes were at least as competitive as any comparable service, and I particularly liked the option of booking excess cover at decent rates through CarDelMar at the same time.
The price was the best around and the booking process was easy. Make sure you book Car Del Mars added insurance to protect your excess as it is cheaper than Avis, which was the supplier of the car, also they tend to pressure into buying it when you get there. We had a long wait at the Avis desk due to a grumpy customer but I couldn't understand why all the staff got involved leaving only one to serve. When we were eventually served it was quick as they soon realised that we were not going to buy their insurance as we already had it. This was what was taking the time with the other customers. The car was clean and the booking process spot on but I feel Car del Mar is being let down by Avis. It was a peak time on a peak week on a peak day. That should equal plenty of staff.
I booked a car rental from Malaga airport via the local agent [external reference removed].
There was a 3 hour, YES A 3 HOUR QUEUE...to pick up the car, there was a fight at the airport !!!
I had to make another rental booking as we had a wedding that we needed to get to...
So I had to book another rental car through the rental company [external reference removed] - there was no queue at the desk AND it was the same price as Car Del Mar !!
TRUST ME .....NEVER EVER USE THIS COMPANY AGAIN....
We received an email 24 hours prior to our departure that our car booking had been cancelled. The email had no solution to our new found problem and left us forced to pay last minute premiums to obtain a rental. I have little confidence in the website or Europe car for that matter (I suspect Euope car were the route of the issue).
However, call centre staff were friendly, therefore it is just the setup of the business and its partners that leaves alot to be desired!
You must have more people serving - 2 to 3 people were dealing with 8 car hire firms
It was really easy to book, i got confirmation quickly and when i got to the airport everything was ready for me. Nice man showed me where the car was and dropping the keys back off was easy, just poped them in the letter box.
Good experience from Europcar - via Cardelmar booking. Got upgrade to brand new FIAT 500. Prompt service after slight delay in bus transfer from airport to car hire terminal. Had an e-mail after completing confirming full invoice cost, with nil to pay following pre-booking which always helps closing out the transaction. No problems recommending Cardelmar
The Internet booking process was quick and painless, however after that it just go worse.
We arrived at Torononto during a torrential down pour, after locating the Avis desk the receptionist was at best disinterested, when he gave me the paperwork I pointed out the full to empty fuel arrangement was missing , and the invoice stated we would be charged . I questioned this and he stated that their soft wear had not been updated but that was fine and it was included, maybe I was tired after a 7 hour flight and having been awake for nearly 20 hours and should have pushed more but I would like to think he knew what he was doing. We were finally presented with a set of keys and told it was parked under the Avis sign....he then disappeared . We go to Canada every year and this is the first time we have not been shown to our car, and been given a quick overview of the controls and agreed the condition. Next came finding the car, remember it was "underneath the Avis sign" do you know how many Avis signs there are in the car rental section ofan international air port ????? Having finally located the car it had been left with the windows open, and due to to hot and humid weather already had a few insects inside, something we do not normally expect until we arrive in a Canadian woodland . The pie e of paper containing used chewing gum in the passenger door pocket was an added bonus !!!!!!!! As a comparison we used Dollar Thrifty last year and were not only shown to the car, invited to examine the vehicle but given two free bottles of water and a street map of Toronto.Leaving the car park caused extra problems as the receptionist had recorded the wrong number from my driving licence, leaving us sitting at the barrier in a hot humid underground car park while the man at the exit barrier rectified the problem. We returned the vehicle as per the agreement and were told at the returns bay we needed to pay for the fuel, neither the man at the returns or his supervisor were able to deal with or understand the issue, so my wife and myself had to traipse over to an Avis booking desk with all our luggage and explain the issue again. Sitting next to the person we explained this too was our original receptionist, who of course was unable to recall the conversation. After cross referring the CarDelmar and Avis documents for a while the latest person agreed to charge us for fuel at the normal retail rate and not Avis standard charge which would have been $100 more so I suppose we should be grateful.
Not sure if the issue here lies with CarDelmer or Avis, however if Avis are the preferred partner for CarDelmar
at Pearson International, we will go back to Dollar Thrifty next year.
CarDelMar is a good agency for car rental with reasonable price. But, your partner, Hertz, in Liverpool Airport is a black hole! Here is the story.
I have been using CarDelMar a few times. And usually I travel with my wife. It was the 1st time for her to travel alone on 09July2013. However, I booked the car through CarDelMar for her. But, when she arrived at the Hertz front desk in Liverpool on time, she was offered an option to downgrade the car and to pay less. Otherwise, she had to wait for 30 mins to get the original car. Does it sound fair? It was actually a trap! The guy at the front desk did not mention that the insurance cost more at the front desk than on line. And he also added the personal life insurance for her without explanation! Actually we both have our own life insurance, provided by our bank. That's why I did not add the life insurance option (~£30) when I booked the car. At the end of day, she drove a lower class car but paid the cost of £288 (100+ more than the original one) How ridiculous this is! Please keep away from Hertz!
On May 13th I booked a car online with Car Del Mar for Rimini airport for the week of 23 June 2013.
I paid €278.60 for a category D vehicle (example given was a Ford Focus).
At arrival (flight came in timely) Hertz handed me the keys of an old (67.000km) and dirty Fiat Panda (category B!) telling me this was the only car they had available. I complained saying that I had paid for a catgeory D and got as answer that Car Del Mar would probably pay me back after I'd complained with them. Nice!
Back home, I notice that Hertz Italia stole another €117.26 o my VISA card on 2 July 2013.
In the meatime I've written a complaint on Car Del Mar's website (but I don't expect that I'll receive an answer) and I have raised a complaint with VISA againts Hertz Italia against Hertz's thievery.

The people in Avis weren't the best I have to say as they did not seem to know about cardelmar vouchers. So be careful, they will try to make you pay extra and can be bordering rude. But cardelmar themselves have fantastic offers and you get the same service as with other car rentals.
On 21. june 13 my plane was cancelled due to a strike in France. I called Car del Mar on the 21. and on the 22. to make them contact Europcar in Nice Airport to let them know that I was delayed and that I could pick up the car 24 hours later than I expected.
When I arrived in the office of Europecar in Nice Airport I was told that my car or case had been closed due to the late pick up and that they had NOT been contacted by Car del Mar.
The lady I spoke to was kind and she gave me another car even she had the right not to, according to the conditions.
Europcar staff were most helpful as the first car i was ment to get had problems with the air conditioning and they were very quick to provide an alternative car with automatic transmission that i had originally booked. The new car was bigger but they did not charge any more for this as the first had a problem. I would recomend them to my friends.
Firstly i had to wait for 1 hour to get served by Avis at Pisa airport. There was only 1 person ahead of me nonetheless the service was very slow and unacceptable.
Secondly, Avis tried very hard to pressure me in to taking insurance that I had already taken with Cardelmar. Avis claimed the insurance from Cardelmar was not recognised by them and they did not consider it valid or acceptable to them and I had to spend considerable time being pressured into spending more money with Avis that I did not believe was necessary as I had already paid Cardelmar.
Thirdly, the car I has paid for via Cardelmar bore very little resemblence with the car i had ordered and was I believed an inferior car. I was unable to get the car changed.
It was very clear that Avis were not pleased to be serving me as a Cardelmar customer and were unhelpful, unfriendly and discourteous. The entire experience was dreadful.
Absolute disgrace. Avoid.
I always dread booking car hire for a holiday as I always end up feeling ripped off by insurance or fuel problems. This time I used CarDelMar after finding a link on the MoneySavingExpert website, and got an excellent price on an Opel Corsa type car for a week, pick up and return to Athens International Airport. I also bought excess insurance myself, also sourced via a link on the MSE website. The car was supplied through Hertz, who at the desk in the airport told me they operated a full to empty fuel policy rather than the full to full promised by CarDelMar, but that didn't surprise me. I was given a Hyundai I20, low mileage and excellent condition, even if not located in the parking bay that Hertz told me it would be in. Anyway, full marks to CarDelMar for a great price and easy to use service, with choice of rental companies, and they were much better than I expected, and lower marks to Hertz who were rather as I had expected, but certainly no worse. I'll definitely use CarDelMar again.
The vehicle was nothing like as described and was actually not even road worthy. I could have been stopped by the police and incurred a serious fine with the vehicle being impounded. This would have left me and my passengers (including young children) stranded at the road side. It was obvious the vehicle had not had any of the basic checks carried out before I collected it (e.g. the offside headlights not working at all!). At great inconvenience to myself and my colleague, I had to make a special trip to Perugia airport in order to have the problems resolved which meant we lost the use of the vehicle for nearly a day. The only slight redeeming factor was with the local Avis staff at Perugia airport were genuinely apologetic, helpful and acted in a very professional manner.
My overall opinion is that this was really not a good experience at all and I would think twice about renting from Avis in the future. I was told that I would receive a 1 day's rental charge credit back to me by way of compensation.
A very simple and easy competitive service. Would definitely use again.
Booked a car with Cardelmar to collect from la Rochelle airport, on arrival the Euopcar office was closed (not open on sunday's apparently) but cardelmar didn't inform us of this. Eventually got hold of Europcar only to be informed that there wasn't a car for us and that cardelmar had been informed of this on the previous day, they didn't bother to tell us.
Marooned with 2 small kids so had to hire a car on the spot from another company and pay an extra £150 to what i'd booked with cardelmar!
We'll see if they do the decent thing....
My flight was cancelled due to heathrow being shut and I managed to get another flight to another airport but they refused to change my booking to the other airport even though the actual car hire company said it could be done but CarDelMar would have to do it as that is where I'd booked it. In the end I just had to tear up the booking and lose the money I'd paid, I'll never use them again as things like that happen.
