We have great fun reading the newspaper together in a group or one to one, residenst enjoy receiving them on there birthdays with date to match, this helps residents to remenis about old songs, look at pictures & chat together.
Each week we run a Memory Cafe for people with dementia, as they come into the room we have the Weekly Sparkle on the tables. We have found that the Sparkle stimulates conversation, and they can recount their own experiences from what they have read. A great way to reminesce!
This weekly newspaper is so useful for a great number of our patients and we all look forward to the next edition. our patients never fail to amaze me at remembering the past so easily but no short term memorys.
Mum (aged 92 with Alzheimer's) looks forward to these and each new copy is the first thing she picks up in the morning. The fact that it is there 7 days a week, Sundays, Bank Holidays, Christmas Day etc means that she never looks forward in vain.
The "Crib" sheets are useful, but as an elderly care myself (age 65!) Most of the articles have some relevance to me and are therefore easily available to talk about with Mum.
As a domestic user, the subscription rate is very reasonable.
I pick up my Daily Sparkle issue each week and these pages jog my memory back to things that happened years ago and I remember when you and i were in High School. Isn't it funy how when you say some is forty or fifty years old, folk say "Och, thats nothing and yet when you say something happened forty or fifty years ago its just almost unbelievable, where does the time go my friend?. What is this thing with time and years passing. Have to say I just love reading my Daily sparkle each week, I must send you a copy, transport you back to our crazy days of school in the fifties, sixties and even the seventies!
This wee newspaper is great, some of the patients who used to be pretty non responsive are now trying to sing the songs and complete the missing words, can't wait to start using the template to add personal pages to the news paper. Even the staff are learning things about history that they never knew, and learning a lot more about the patients with all the different topics covered which gives them ideas to ask a lot more questions. It really is a fab group.
The residents look forward to our daily sparkle sessions, that instigate conversation amongst resident and staff alike as they share memories and wake up the grey matter to recall the answers to things burried in the recesses of the mind. It is an easy activity that can be picked up and used with a group or individually whenever there is a moment. We love It !
The Idea is fantastic but I gave my feedback to the company for the last Two years but nothing has changed!! I informed them that the carer`s notes are rubbish, not informative and certainly not enough information on them to enable carer`s delivering the sparkle, to expand on the Information to make the session last longer. I have subscribed now for Four years and have found thet the each year is repeated with just date changes.
I have been holding Coffee Mornings every Monday and I can't get over how well they are going since we started daily sparkle, Every subject seems to roll into a full blown conversation that leads all different directions to other matters. Our residents really look forward to it and it also gives me lots of confidence as its given me more knowledge on some subjects and led me researching some subjects deeper to enhance the chats.
We find the Daily Sparkle a useful tool here at Hillside, It has interesting facts, a quiz etc.,and its a great aid to initiate conversation or a reminiscence session. We use it in our activity sessions and I also leave copies in the lounges so residents, visitors, carers etc., can just pick it up and have a look through.
The Weekly Sparkle has provided the home with an excellent activity for our residents. the comprehensive support guide. This assists our activities co -ordinators to provide an interesting activities session, one in which most of our residents are able to participate. The paper is used over several days and also provides a stimulating read for those who choose not to participate into a group activity. I would recommend the paper to others
Our residents enjoy their daily sparkle. It brings them together as a group. They particularly enjoy the daily quiz. The daily sparkle provides a tool to ensure that everyday something different is talked about.
