I don't know how a company like Dell can continue running their business with their current customer support base.
Their hardware is okay, far from the best out there, but does the job... until some hidden self-destruct mechanism goes off after a predetermined time (that's my belief anyway).
I had a laptop for about three years before it kicked the bucket, and, to my surprise, I had forgotten about the warranty that I had with it. It was actually due to run out about a month after the time of the laptop dying.
Called up support, was redirected to India and was put on the line with totally unhelpful staff that I couldn't understand, and who probably couldn't understand me. If you think it's as simple as saying "My laptop is broken, and the warranty covers it, please come and send assistance" then think again. After hours of multiple calls - each new call starting the whole process over again - I was getting nowhere.
First off, they don't believe you. They tried to diagnose my near dead laptop over the phone, which was an absolute nightmare. I managed to somehow spark some life into it and go through a few BIOS checks over the phone with Dell. The results of that? Inconclusive, but they "suspected" different problems.
I had to get a family member braver than I to shout down the phone at them to send an engineer out. On and on this went, and then they finally did their job, sent an engineer out who didn't have the proper equipment. On the phone again, they send another engineer who actually fixes the laptop. Woo!
Then the laptop dies of the same problem two months later.
To summarise: AVOID DELL IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY.
My Partner had a Dell Laptop, it was the worst one he has ever had, he spent weeks on the phone to them, and them to him, sometimes for hours on end, and to no avail the problems just couldn't be resolved, it wasn't a cheap laptop, he ordered it on line, and configured it to his personal spec, but in the end after 6 months he ended up sending it back for them to sort it out and when it came back exactly the same, he gave up and purchased another make, I can say the replacement Sony has been no trouble at all.
I have had Dell equipment in the work place and they have always had lots of probllems, not worth the money, or the time you spend sorting out the problems
I ordered an Alienware M14X laptop, these are assembled to order in China and I received it in 7 days, and that was when it snowed! I couldn't be happier with my purchase and everyone I spoke with was very pleasant and committed to providing a good level of service even before I had made the purchase.
If possible reformat it as soon as you get it. Dell, like many other big companies, have a tendancy to fill your new computer with resource intensive crud that you'll never use! You'll find that by uninstalling (or reformat if you are competant) you'll gain another 10%+ from your new PC!

Terrible experience, will never buy from them again!! This is the third Dell I have bought but the first dealing with Asia. Never had a problem in the past when dealing with Ireland, now it is just a farce, even had an engineer call me that couldn't speak English!!
We have owned two Dells here, purchased over the past several years. They have been steady, reliable workhorses for both home and the office. In checking prices against competitors, Dell has been cost effective for our tight budget, yet has not compromised quality.
Customer service has been professional, friendly, and actually helpful as we have faced technical issues over the years.
Thanks for your faithfulness, and committment to excellence.
Jesus is Lord!
I have had problems in the past with other good named PCs, but since purchasing a Dell I have never looked back, they give excellent service , i have even replaced a DVD Player Burner unit following their instructions given with parts, it was so easy and I know nothing about the workings of PCs etc.
I have had my Dell for 4 years now and it is used 8 hours a day every day.
Once you log on the sales person tries to give you their personal email address, and hounds you to buy from them. I liked Dell but since the time I contacted their sales team online, I've felt uncomfortable dealing with them. They could also work on one charger fits all on their laptops, yes, it can be done, no, they are lying if they tell you otherwise.
Recent calls to the company told me they will only give advice if you agree to pay a fee. Even the On Line Manuals aren't available properly.I managed to get a friend to fix the problem in 2 mins free of charge. What happened to customer care and the chance I might but another Dell Product if they had been willing to help.
Dell equipment is now tending to provide style over substance, especially laptops.
Too many components are now non-standard and ties you into Dell for repairs.
Little retro support for installing new operating systems on older but still viable equipment
Bought a Dell laptop for my daughter - never again. The laptop has given countless problems. Returned to company several times under manufacturer's warranty and then to Know-How at least half-a-dozen times. The Dell Inspiron has left us truly un-inspired!
I had the system in my basket, all I had were a few simple questions that I needed to ask, I called sales, clearly in India and was passed from pillar to post, sorry but I was looking to spend £1000 and for that money I like to feel confident, the product may be good but I didn`t get that far.
I bought a Dell laptop as I'd had good experiences with Dell in the workplace. Took forever to arrive and impossible to track effectively - seemed to be lost for weeks. All the names and contacts I was given were never to be heard of again. Their info was out of date, the delivery company had moved their base 2 years before and told Dell many times, but Dell kept giving me the old address. Spent hours and hours on phone lines, being cut off, told garbage, etc.
Warning: Dell assumes you have internet access, which I didn't have till I GOT the laptop!!
just bought new home computer and a laptop, spent quite some time reviewing various makes but Dell always had that something extra, the desktop tower is quiet very well specified and has a great deal on Microsoft Office along with Windows7 Pro, the XPS laptop is incredible, the LCD screen is brilliant, and gorgeous to touch, great sound quality and superb key board, both were delivered earlier than estimated and I was kept informed by email as to the revised delivery dates, well done Dell...
I always watch their twitter outlet feed for crazy good deals. I have bought 3 computers from these guys over the last 7 years and been very happy with customer service, tech support, and the laptops. Would recommend them!!
