Confusing customer services

I placed my order for Derwent Muck Boots successfully as the site said they were in stock. However, the next day I received an email saying they were out of stock and that I should get in contact but there was no guidance as to how. I mailed back and asked and received a mail back with a ticket number for my enquiry. Then I had a mail advising that the Derwent line had been discontinued and asked if I'd like to have their replacement boot instead at the same price. I accepted that and I received them very quickly. I just don't understand why the Derwent were not shown as out of stock which would have saved me time and them money?
