Problem-free Purchase

I had not heard of this company before until someone mentioned it to me so I was a little nervous about buying. However, I bought a competitively priced computer from Ginger 6, as a present, ordering barely a week before Christmas . Pleased to say, it arrived with no problems or fuss, in good time for Xmas day, and I am told that with the latest Ubuntu O/S loaded "it just flies". Well, one month later it is still apparently flying. The best recommendation for this seller, though, is the fact that I have just ordered a second similar computer which I am expecting to arrive in the next few days.

Some improvements could be made in customer service. Although I will say they actually respond via email!

I'll start off with the bad because there is a lot of it. I selected a basic pc model and customised it upwards to what I'd like. The website didn't inform me of any conflicts and all was well until I received a phone call outlining why I had to pay a bit more and receive a lot less [I was informed I'd have to pay a bit more for fans].

The power supply unit I found in the machine was 450W as opposed to the agreed spec of 500W, the wireless card I paid for was incredibly bad and knocked out when it felt like it. When I installed windows 7 on the pc the motherboard decided to have some fun and games with me. So off to a bad start.

I did the sensible thing and called up the hotline for some customer service (I'm assuming good from all the rave reviews). I was told to open the machine up to check the wireless card was installed correctly whilst the machine was on! (something I could have done myself but funnily enough, it also invalidates my warranty). I followed all the instructions as the lady advised and didn't get anywhere. The drivers were up to date etc.

Naturally I asked for a refund, because what person wouldn't when something doesn't perform as it is sold? I called again asking for my £10 back (the price of the component itself) and where to send it to. The woman confessed a lot of complaints are received by the company surrounding the same issue. My initial thoughts were 'why are you still selling this component if it has a history of terrible reliability?'. I reminded her that she should give me a refund because there is nothing more that can be done to rectify the problem.

The conversation ended on good terms and she said she'd call back after speaking with the manager. Unsurprisingly she never called back. Clearly being respectful, polite and patient was not getting me anywhere and I don't recommend using this company again. I tried building this spec (of the order) on my own and Ginger 6 priced it cheaper.

However customer service is truly terrible, appalling in fact. Not to mention I found that the motherboard is actually damaged or not performing as it should having used a variety of hardware (USB thumb drives, mouses and keyboards) all of which either underperform or knock out after a while. The temperature gauge was also damaged on the motherboard which definitely scared me for sure given the temperature restrictions on the AMD processor inside! What made things worse is that the bios wasn't even updated to the latest version out of courtesy and that itself was a handful.

This goes beyond bad customer service to sheer incompetence. Looking back on it I wished I had just spent a little extra money and made this build myself knowing that everything will work as it should. As opposed to relying on this company who as far as they are concerned just don't care about what they do.

A lot of these issues (spec wise) could have been avoided by updating and putting in some time and effort into their website. The customer care thing could be considered a one off given that all companies have a constant battle in providing good customer service. However all things considered its just not worth your time and effort. A lot of people make pcs out there and they have good customer service. In some ways you get what you pay for, in the other sense I wished Ginger 6 could be more informative on their website. They should definitely deliver a scathing response to ASUS who just decided to RMA the board no questions asked.

Update: Customer support seems to have improved through email at least. Called up the other day over a drivers failure with my GPU and the lady requested I email in the problem with as much depth as possible. I went as far as I could for detail. She kept in touch on a regular basis. Once every couple of days. Not great but definitely not bad (all things considered its pretty good for a private non nationwide company) so it seems like that email at least is a more constructive way in contacting them. She made some useful suggestions too like checking for the latest drivers. The problem has definitely driven me mad with the software (AMD Catalyst Control Centre) telling me there is no overclock on the GPU but there actually being so. I only knew that once I looked up on AMD's specifications for my GPU. Then there was the added issue of the voltage being too restrictive and my GPU being squeezed for power for whatever reason. It had plenty of headroom but the motherboard seems to do a crappy job in managing it. Something I'm looking to upgrade my way out of in the future as its pathetic from ASUS. A ratings system on their site would be good as that way I could say to other people not to bother with this ASUS motherboard and pick something else.

Major flaws and minor reimbursement

I customised my first tower with Ginger6, recommended to me by a friend.

http://www.ginger6.com/g6-oc660-fx-gtx-660-ti-multimedia-gaming-pc-p-54446.html

(link to the PC)

Firstly, I chose the upgrade from the Standard AMD CPU Cooler (again recommended by a friend for over-clocking use, etc.). When I received the PC the motherboard was not picking up any peripherals or booting up. It was switching on but the red light wasn't flashing or fan wasn't sounding. This was the first fault, the second - they had sent the tower unit itself in blue. I asked for red. A minor problem but a clearly specified choice, on the invoice, nonetheless.

Hats off to them, they took it back, fixed it and sent it back. They even gave me some (cheap ass) gamer headphones also, which I do not use (because they are just terrible). Great, everything was in working order. No problems for a while.

Second issue resulted when I wanted to install a fire wire card into a free PCI Express slot... oh boy, was this a nightmare... so, in order to not break my warranty, I would have to purchase a card, send the PC back to Ginger6 (paying both for mailing it to them and them mailing it back to me, AND, on top of that, they wanted to charge me labour costs... so to install a fire wire card of £30, I'd be paying £100. £50 delivery and pick up, £20 labour. Absolute nuts... thankfully managed to bargain with them to just pay the delivery costs. Over the moon, but still... £70 to install a fire wire card... honestly...

So, que issue three... got the PC back ... the same problem had occurred with the motherboard. It was not picking up the monitor, the mouse or any other hardware, etc. Immediately got on the phone and arranged a pick up and re-delivery (was no chance in hell I was paying postage this time). Once the PC was in a technicians 'capable' hands he told me the artic cooler I had upgraded to wasn't 'compatible' with the motherboard. Basically what was happening was the cooler was dislodging the motherboard in transit as it was too large. Now, this is fair enough. Only, shouldn't I maybe have been notified of this before even purchasing these components? To save me all the trouble in the very beginning? I guess this piece of information was left out. Somehow.

So... finally, issue four... they replaced the artic cooler with a standard cooler... they put the PC in transit and it was on it's way to me... it even arrived the very next day (a delightful first). Except... it WASN'T my PC. It was addressed to me, but once opened an invoice to someone who lives in Buckingham-Shire (or there abouts) was staring me in the face. I actually, for a second, thought they had given me a brand new PC with a cool new tower case (the case was actually cooler than mine to look at) but the specs were certainly not... 300gb hard drive and 4gb RAM over 2tb hard drive and 8gb RAM? No thanks.
So, I immediately contacted the delivery company, AJG Parcels, hoping my PC might still be in the van (as he had just delivered). They informed me it was the distributing company's fault and that I should take it up with them. Phoned Ginger6, managed to sort out this horrendous mess. PC was picked up and mine was delivered two days after. With a massive hole in the box, I might ad... luckily everything was fine inside... sigh.

This is a hugely summed up version of my ordeal in dealing with this company. The amount of time, stress and money I have invested into this company has not been worth the end product.
I can predict the reply being "we did everything we could" and "we cannot apologise more for any inconvenience" , but this simply isn't good enough. I paid for that computer and more, and not just in money. I shouldn't have had to send it back four-five times or go through any of that malarchy. It's a joke. It really is.

I will state that Leah has been very helpful. Although, she could maybe make it sound like she actually does care about a customer's situation though. Sounding monotone consistently does imply a lack of empathy/sympathy. Especially when someone has been through something like this. Just the impression I got.

Lastly, I asked if there was any reimbursement for all I had been put through. Leah said she would send me out some game vouchers (tomb raider and bioshock, or something). Not the biggest fan of tomb raider, but hey, at least it's something.

It had been a week since I had heard any word so I thought I'd call today to see if I was still getting any vouchers. Was told that vouchers would be available when suppliers send out graphics cards (the vouchers come with them apparently). When would suppliers send you graphic's cards, I ask. Can't say, not for a while most likely though.

After hearing that I just told her not to bother. It was the final straw, hearing that. As minor as it was.

So, now, I am selling my Tower and converting to MAC.

Hope this review has been helpful to you. Not saying you should, or should not, buy from Ginger6.

Just my story.

All the best.

Epic awesomness

I scouted the web for a while, considered ordering my own parts and found other "we build your PC for you" sites. While this wasn't even in my googling my brother recommended it to me. I dug around and decided that when the Oculus Rift is commercially ready I need a high end PC to help me enjoy it. I bought more than I'd hoped for :D

Boots in 4 seconds, LOVE windows 8 (never thought I'd say that), graphics are insane, haven't yet managed to max out the GPU frame rate; need to buy a more resource hungry game now, and is perfectly balanced with all hardware. System rating was even across the board.

Delivery was prompt. I even asked if could come on a certain day after ordering and they replied immediately. Good courier choice to.

My only complaint is I like looking inside a pc to and the first thing I did was take the side panel off to have a look, not realizing the warranty sticker was on the side :( so by just having a look I've now lost my warranty :( fingers crossed I have no problems in the next 3 years

Other than that brilliant. Get your site bumped up in the search engines.

cheers

Order to delivery in 3 days

When I first found Ginger 6 during my search for a gaming PC I was uncertain whether to trust a small company I'd never heard of before. I read large numbers of reviews and as the majority of them were overwhelmingly positive, decided to give them a go. I was not disappointed. I have had absolutely no issues, either with the construction & delivery time, their customer services when I rang to enquire about speeding up the process, nor with the product itself. You could not find this kind of power for the money without building the unit yourself, I am very pleased and would definitely shop with Ginger 6 again.

Incidentally, the courier service they use has a large number of extremely bad reviews online, but I think this is due to being a franchise operation. My PC was delivered by the Caerphilly depot and while the drivers were obviously in a bit of rush (long day!) it arrived on the expected day with no problems.

Not bad

I am happy with the computer I bought.
But apparently I had a call saying that I need to pay extra money for another power supply because the one online system suggested to me was not good enough for my graphic card.
I expect the system to change any parts if it does not work with each other when you build your own PC, just like other web-sites do.
That is the only comment from me.

Problem with return factory fault broken items.

New hard drive had crack on plastic panel. To return, check, then wait for answer from manufacturer, then receive replaced item, it takes about 2-4 week. This is not acceptable, as i payed money to receive new item ASP. I couldn't wait for so long, so now gave new item without any warranty. Upsetting... Now thinking about new sellers...

Hi Marius,

All we have asked is for you to return the drive to us for us to have a look at. I think there must be some confusion, as the manufacturer wont be involved, and the process wont take 2-4 weeks.

If you send the drive back to us we will get it turned around asap.
