Having received a car stereo (from Halfords) for Christmas I went to the shop (Newport, Isle of Wight) to have it fitted. I was told that it would cost £49.99 + parts, rather than the £29.99 that my partner was previously told. I was also told that it would take a minimum of 2 hours and I would have to wait over a week for an available slot. Meanwhile numerous staff were milling about doing next to nothing.
I fitted it myself in their car park, buying a £5 aerial converter along the way, in about an hour. For experienced staff it would have taken a maximum of half an hour to do.
Whilst waiting I also saw an elderly lady asking for confirmation that she'd selected a correct item for her car, only to be told to check it in the book herself.
A physical store has one possible advantage over an online one - customer service. Halfords are not utilising this advantage and I for one will shop online rather than return there in future.
