Went to my local Bolton Halfords as it is the only place my company uses for the cycle to work scheme. I, could not decide between two different Boardman road bikes I had looked up on the website.
Waited around for what seemed an age to speak with a member of staff. The staff member was very polite, but looked at me as if I had two heads when I asked if I could take a bike for a test ride. I offered to leave my passport, car keys, even the wife and two kids to prevent me from "doing a runner". After speaking to the Store Manager I was told I could ride around the inside of the store! How on earth am I supposed to test a bike in that way? I left the store with my money still in my pocket!
I bought a cheap bikea couple of years ago at the edinburgh cycle store, who bent over backwards to make sure the bike suited me. I think I will after to forgo the savings with the cycle to work scheme and return there.
How can you call it a full service when you don't even change filters and the basics such as spark plugs. It's an absolute disgrace.
I paid £160, and when i got my car back I had problems with acceleration and it turned out that my fuel filter was filthy and needed replacing and this should have been included in a full service.
I would never recommend Halfords ever again.
On the one hand, they have all the bike parts I'll ever need and the staff are always helpful and willing to part with a little advice on bike maintenance.
On the other, trying to get them to do work on the bike themselves is an absolute chore. Long waiting times despite nearly empty schedules and the work is too often of questionable quality. One particular example is when I took my bike in for a yearly once-over (I do regular maintenance myself) and they replaced my chain. That night, cycling home from work, the chain snapped in the middle of a busy junction.
Their service centres are crap. Paid full whack for a full service and full oil change on my Mercedes 4x4 at the end of December 2011 (not cheap). Car did not even feel as it had been serviced - has been driving horribly for last 2 months and have now been told by independent garage that my car is in dire need of a "FULL" service - only 2 months after Halfords Colindale "supposedly" serviced it. They are more interested in selling you the expensive "extras" when servicing than dealing with the main job at hand. DO NOT part with your money - I recommend using anyone else but. Complained to the Manager after Christmas re service and was told that a service had been done and that was the end of matter and they couldnt help further. Stick to installing car seats and radios Halfords.
I had an MOT on my wifes car, booked the appointment online and paid at the same time.
The car failed on uneven braking,£30 to apply a little grease to the brake sliders, fair enough for a ten minute job.
I was phoned to tell me the car was ready went to collect and paid the extra on my debit card.
On checking the invoice in the car I found they had charged me twice for the MOT so went back in to have the card refunded, sorry we cant do that you will have to get a refund online, what a load of tosh and inconvenience.
I did get the money refunded eventually but what is wrong with a quick swipe of the card like every other business uses.
Took my car for a service at halfords merton- they charged about 400 quid for service, brake pads and other things - in the course of replacing the fluids, they ruined the electrics (bonnet indicators, car alarm). When I asked them to fix it, they refused to take any responsibility for it. "Anything to do with the computers - you need to go to Volkswagen directly".
The mechanics also clearly knew they had managed to ruin something as they were trying to tell me that "this is fine, this is the way its meant to work" as I born yesterday.
Shockingly bad - avoid at all costs.
I went to Halfords to have new wipers fitted, they cost a bomb.
My Partner has just had his done at a VW dealers, they did the fittiing for free, and the set of 3 wipers, front and back were £30, we checked out Halfords, and it was £30 for the front ones, and about £20 for the rear, with fitting on top.
The VW engineer showed my Partner how to park the wipers, to make it easy to replace them, and how the winter wiper care system works, Halfords probably wouldn't have known that, and would probably have just yanked the wipers up from under the edge of the bonnet.
More training for staff, and better more competative prices would be a bonus.
i would like to rate louis from halfords in harrow as an excellent member of staff he helped me with my problem with my car kit even when parrot refused to.i would recommend anyone to go to halfords in harrow as you will get very good service from this store.louis is a very helpful member of staff and i would not go to any other halfords store apart from harrow.
My partner and I bought two Apollo bikes 7 months ago from Halfords Bournemouth. All I can say is, thank god we bought a care plan as we have had to take the bikes back practically every month with issues. Mainly the gears having multiple issues constantly, a loud clunking sound through the pedals, back wheel bending... We take care of the bikes and ride them everyday to work and although Apollo is the cheapest make, you should still get a bike that actually works! The Bournemouth branch seems to employ mainly teenagers and I think better work may have been done by older people with more experience (one time my partner got a new wheel put on by one of the teenagers and he put it on the wrong way!!!) I think the staff are incompetent, I know that sounds harsh because they are very friendly and helpful but they clearly are not as experienced as they need to be as when they say they have fixed it, once we are outside riding away, we can feel its not 100% but just cant be bothered to go in and hang around for another 30 mins whilst they look at it again so put up with it until it gets unrideable. I won't be buying from Halfords ever again- the past 7 months have been a nightmare with this piece of lead I've been riding around.
My daughter is at university in Nottingham, She took her nissan micra in for its MOT. It failed on a ns headlight aim too low,They charged her £6.95 to readjust headlight, In total it cost her£61.35. £54.85 for the mot and £6.50 for the headlight adjustment, She drove home this weekend 120 miles to Blackburn so i took it to the local garage which i have used for years and trust. (very rare i know) for an oil change, and asked him to give it a quick look over while there, He rang me up and said i needed to come back and see what he had found, It needed a rear ns wheel bearing, Front os wheel bearing and a new offside front cv joint, He said the car should not have passed the MOT last week. Basically she drove home on the motorway in a deathtrap, If the bearings had failed on the motorway i dread to think what could have happened. I will never enter another Halfords shop ever again and neither will any of my family. You have been warned, The car has now been repaired and is safe for her to drive back to Nottingham.
What no cheques! I went to buy £48.00 worth of paints, only to be told once I had made a specific journey,to the Durham Store, and waited in a queue ''argh, sorry no cheques'' I am sorry, at what point did cheques NOT become acceptable??? OK some 'sleeeeezy' corner shop perhaps I could understand why but Halfords, when in the main the prices are sky high to start with, you really would not think they would preclude an acceptable payment method.... After all I had a cheque garentee card way above the amount I was purchasing…. I AM SO ANNOYED What a waste of my time, not to say fuel etc… DISGRACEFUL.
Halfords is useful to have if it's a Sunday and nowhere else is open and you need something urgently, but it is very expensive.
For any car stuff (parts, fluids, bulbs, tools), a motor factors will sell to you at trade price so it will be about half as much as halfords charge. Only problem is they don't tend to open on sundays! Bulbs are a particular rip-off in Halfords, e.g. £20 for a single standard bulb whereas I got a pair of very good branded ones for £13 somewhere else.
A motor factors will also be able to offer good advice, whereas I've spoken to very few halfords staff that have the breadth and depth of knowledge to advise people about car problems; it often seems to be part time sixth-form kids.
Don't be tempted to pay over the top for fitting bulbs, wiper blades etc. It's usually just a 30-second job and you can save yourself £20 by doing it yourself.
I went into the Milton Keynes store to buy a navman at about 11am on a Friday. After looking around I decided that the checkout girl could poss help as she was sat doing her nails.. So I ask her for some assistance and she called for a staff member via Tannoy. After aprox 5 mins no one had shown, in the meantime the same staff member had been called 3 times via tannoy to different areas of the store. I looked around the store saw at least 3-4 members of staff behind the parts counter drinking tea/chatting and only 2 other customers browsing the store. I couldn't help but think of how many unemployed people would be happy to work there and probably do the job. After a total of 10 mins I left.
I thought I would just order the product on line from Halfords instead... Big mistake that was. I chased up my order after 5 days to be told its been delivered and you signed for it...... after asking when, I was told the previous day.. Weird as I was off from work and at home all day, no one knocked no card through door. I checked my neighbour’s op parcel. I re contacted Halfords who initially were very helpful, I was told the copy of the signature looked nothing like my name. The lady stated she would be passing it on as she only worked weekends, but don’t worry we will dispatch the product again. We will get a statement from the driver and a description of who singed it from him etc.
I received an email from someone else 2 days later basically calling me a liar and that the item was signed for and that I should send a copy of a picture id with signature on it to them. When asked why they stated to look at the signature. I then asked what would happen to this "copy" and considering its my driving licence how it would be handled to get told "you want us to help you or not". I then suggested that I would edit the copy of my driving licence for my address d.o.b. and driver number etc. this was still not good enough. I then asked if the driver had given a description of the person who signed for the item I was told “no, why, you signed for it”.
I then checked up on the delivery company to find out it was Yodel!!! Any hope of getting my item is gone. It’s clear they don’t know how to investigate the simplest of matters, and use a thrid rate delivery company. So I am off to trading standards to get my money back via distance selling regulations (with any luck).
I recently bought some goods at the Andover Branch. All very painless, if a little pricey, although I have to take the parts back as they did not fit the car.
When I was there I asked if I could also return a socket extension from their professional range, that had failed where the ball bearing holds the socket on the end. This was not a cheap tool - part of a set that cost in excess of £100.
I was told that I had to produce the reciept - which was a bit difficult as it was bought 6 years ago! I was then told that I had to have proof of purchase to validate the lifetime guarantee - oh and then the sales assistant said, that the lifetime warranty did not cover moving parts and as the ball bearing was a moving part it was not covered.
Halfords - this is an abosulte crock of Sh!te. If you offer a lifetime warranty you should not expect customers to retain a receipt for their entire lifetime - it should be a staement of the quality of the tools that justify the price. It shouldn;t matter whp bought them, or require a recipt to prve I bought them. Where else am I going to buy a complete set of Halfords tools.
So be warned - the Halfords 'Life Time' Warranty on it's professional only applys to the bits that do not have moving parts and then only if you can prove you bought it from Halfords by showing a receipt. Utter CRAP - I Vow never to buy tools from Halfords again unless I am totally desperate!!!
The only true benefit of going to Halfords is if there's one near you and your are desperate for a particular item same day, otherwise it's always best to shop around either to independents or online stores.
I've seen items sold by them at 50+% more than most others sell.= them!
I gave 3 stars purely because of the huge selection they have
I wanted a spare part for my car. I am extremely ignorant about cars. The young man at the branch in Seafield, Edinburgh, couldn't have been more helpful. He went to all kinds of trouble to fix me up with what I needed, and said if I'd any trouble fitting the part, just to take the car round and they'd fit it for me. First class service!
my wife, a pensioner, went into halfords when her battery would not start her car, after a shopping trip, she was quoted over £68 for a battery and nearly £7 to fit it. The price of the battery wasnt bad but to try to charge her £7 to fit it is in my opinion is highway robbery. Call yourselfs a helpful shop
Ordered a bike online a little while ago, had it put together by the Havant store. Haven't ridden for years, told the guy and he took me around everything, helmets, lights etc without a big sales pitch, very relaxed and light hearted. I love them there - whenever I need anything I drive straight past my local store back to Havant for more of the same small store service from a big company, they're great :-)
Used their collect service a couple of times and both times it was a big let-down, Also ordered 2 bikes for my kids this christmas and they both came with various problems. Chain hanging off one and the brakes set so tight on the other that the wheel will barely turn. Rubbish!
I had some windscreen wipers fitted by the store staff. I was very happy with this service which was done straight away.
A few weeks later the wiper started to fall apart. Unfortunately I had lost the receipt and hoped the store staff culd help me by finding a copy of the receipt as I had paid by card.
I make a point of being as friendly and polite as possible as i used to work in a shop and now what some customers can be like but this was rewarded with 'don't care' and unhelpful attitude. When I asked to speak to the manager I was told there was no point as he would say the same thing, I insisted I would still like to speak with him.
After being kept waiting for half an hour I was told the manager would see me now and he is on the counter at the back of the store. I think it wouldve been more professional for him to come to me and listen to my concerns. As I approached the manager before I said a word these are the words that came out of his mouth "I aint doing it".
This instantly got my back up and at that point I wasn't leaving the shop without a new wiper blade.
I tried to be so polite but firm but he was so rude to me, saying that he gets thousands of requests like this without receipts and I could've bought it from anywhere even though it was an own brand wiper blade. I kept saying that I know I have a responsibility to provide a proof of purchase but surely out of goodwill he could help me as it is one of their own parts.
When I threatened to contact head office the manager seemed so offended and 'couldn't believe I threatened him with that'.
In the end I had to get my wife to fax a bank statement through before he would even look for the receipt, all the while i'm wrestling with a 1 year old and a 4 year old trying to occupy them. The manager to his credit did change the wiper blade eventually but rather annoyingly didn't even check the fax that was sent and went ahead and did t anyway.
Overall very disappointing and a really unproffesional attitude at all levels. I definitely will actively avoid this place in future.
Went in their today to get their prices on a couple of items so I could see just how much I'd save when going in the motor factors a little further down the road to buy. Saved about 25-30% down the road, and got free bleed nipple thrown in.
What a truly terrible shop they really are.
Reserved a sat-nav in their sale last night, told it was in stock and I could collect it today. Surprise, surprise got a phone call today that it was no longer in stock.
Now, I wonder why that could be, possibly because the staff arrived and saw the prices?
Had a quick Google around regarding the matter and it appears that almost everybody that ordered a satnav in their sale also received a similar phone call:
"It's not in stock any longer..."
"It's damaged beyond repair and we can't sell it any more..."
"We can't find it in the stockroom..."
"Our system was broken and reporting incorrect stock levels..."
Pathetic really. Avoid this company like the plague.
Halfords is both convenient and well stocked.
It's the perfect place to go for accessories like bulbs etc, not the cheapest but parts are available off the shelf so worth the small premium.
Their leisure / bikes section is also extremely good value for money too.
They loose a mark for a few recent let-downs.
First, ultra-brilliance bulbs, only seem to last 6 months, expensive to replace these so frequently!
Second, bike assembly, a little bit sloppy, worth checking things over yourself as well before riding if you don't want to have an accident!
Bought 3 identical Halfords tyre inflators for my sons and myself. 2 broke soon after, but had lost receipt so I did nothing. Eventually found receipt with still a few weeks guarantee left. They changed the two, but would not accept that there was a design fault, so refused to do anything about the third. Appeals by email produced no result, in fact made it clear they cared nothing about the poor quality of their goods, so I'm left with an inflator which I'm afraid to use because I know it's going to break down soon. I could understand if the items were used regularly, but tyre inflators are only used a few times a year, so should last years.
