Good car, somewhat misleading description of rental company

On arrival at Budapest, I followed the brief description of where the rental company's (Thrifty) office was at the terminal. However, it soon became clear that they were not an on-airport company (despite the conditions of hire saying that "Airport Charges" were included). I had to phone the company to get them to come to the airport to pick me up.

Once at their office, the service was good and the car excellent - only ~2500 km on the clock and at least one class up from what I had booked and paid for. The only "fly in the ointment" was that when we went out to check the car, it only had half a tank of fuel. "Oh, no problem" they said, "just bring it back with half a tank". This is easier said than done, as you cannot monitor the fuel level when you are at the petrol station filling it up and the fuel gauge was rather non-linear in operation. I ended up taking it back with 3/4 of a tank, which was frustrating.

Nice car but beware of electronic parking brakes

I had booked an economy car as I needed luggage space for at least 3 people. The car was provided by Avis/Budget at Perugia Airport. No problems with picking up the car or returning it. I was very pleasantly suprised when the car turned out to be a 4 door Audi A3 with 3000km on the clock. This car has an electronic parking brake with an on/off switch. unfortunately these take a lot of getting used to, especially since there wasn't a word of info in English. The secret to releasing it properly turns out to be gently putting your foot on the brake while switching the electric brake off. If you hold your foot on the brake too firmly the electronic brake fails to release leading to a warning display and eventual brake overheating. I wish I had found this out earlier in the hire. It would have saved me 4 days of stress!

Time is money !

We were directed to Firefly in Malaga. It took 2.5 hours to get to the desk. I was then presented with 2 options - (1) - pay 67euros. for insurance or (2) pay a deposit of 600 euros.
Option (1) allowed for a simple drop-off of car and keys on return. Option (2) involved queuing again for a vehicle inspection. I was forced to go for option (1), the alternative being to risk missing a flight. Having taken out HA deposit insurance, the reality is that is that it was of no benefit.
Having said this, the car was fine and Firefly`s performance may well be par for the course. This means that on another occasion, I would not bother with the HA insurance.

Holiday Autos are fine but they shouldn't use Firefly

Booked a car for Milan through Holidayautos and the hire company we got was Firefly in Milan. The car was old and dented and had over 100k k/m on it. Not good

holiday autos excellent, car hire company Green Motion even better

Booking with holiday autos could not be any simpler, the outstanding part was Green Motion the car hire company, they picked us up at liverpool airport within minutes of calling them( not a half mile walk to car park like companies situated at the airport, not what you need in inclement weather). It takes less than 5 mins to crown plaza hotel where they are based, and the staff are so friendly and jovial it was a pleasure dealing with them.On completion the handing back of the vehicle was a pleasant experience and then a drive back to the airport terminal. thoroughly recommend.

Good price and excellent service

Competitively priced and efficient service - wait at desk rather long as only one person attending, but had submitted all my info in advance so quickly served once turn came. Only used less than half a tank of fuel and received email on return saying my card would be credited, which was pleasing.

Only downside was that I was concerned that the minor damage on the car was not noted on paperwork and worried all week that I would be accused of doing it, but this was not the case.

I always take annual excess protection with Insure4hire.

great price but a VERY LONG wait

Car price good, car was clean and well kept, staff helpful but had to stand in a queue for TWO AND A HALF HOURS to get to counter, NO FUN!!! Would suggest paying extra if possible for the priority check in. You do not have to take car with fuel, so can fuel up off site if you want the hassle to save a few euro! We prefer to get in and go! Also you are credited for any fuel left in the car at drop off, my email telling me of the credit was there before we even got back home!

Car excellent but pushy sales tactics on picking up the car

The online booking was easy and everything was clearly stated in the small print. My car was provided by ALAMO at Dulles USA.. The transport to and from the airport was very good. All I have to say is that I was disappointed by the highly pressurised and unethical sales technique of the ALAMO representative. I had booked a basic car which was adequate but the man immediately said the car I had ordered was tiny for us and 2 moderate cases. I had paid up front and he was upgrading me. In the past upgrades when offered have been free but he was charging $160 more without telling me. I enquired specifically if I was being charged and he said I was. I was unhappy with that so he said as I was travelling with United Airlines he would reduce to $100. My wife liked the upgrade car but hadnt actually seen the one we booked. When I asked to see the car I had booked it was perfectly adequate with a good sized boot that would have taken our cases. I was on two crutches due to an injury and tired from the flight and my wife was unhappy about completing paperwork again so we took the upgrade but were not happy with the unethical tactics . The representative also tried to imply that the upgrade would be better as we would not suffer any allergies and the original car may cause allergic reactions as it had done 20,000 miles. The thing is another rep who was serving the customer next to me was confronted with the same unethical sales pitch stating the car he had ordered was tiny. BE VERY CAREFUL when dealing with reps for Alamo at Dulles airport and don;t get ripped off like we did !

Beware Hidden fuel charges

Overall a good experience at Lisbon Airport. Actually off site, Interrent is a low cost subsidiary of Europcar, shuttle service adequately efficient. So, starting from what is admittedly a low cost for a 7 day rental, 60€ they manage to add on another 20€ by making you pay for a full tank of petrol at their rates, which are at least 20% higher than average pump prices.
Be careful to read the small print when booking through Holiday autos, because any deal where you have to take the car back as close to empty as possible, is a rip off. They are going to resell the fuel that you just gave them, other than that no complaints, but that one REALLY GETS UP MY NOSE!

Acceptable

The service was efficient and the car was adequate, though I didn't realise that Opel made such an underpowered car. My only real complaint is that they operate the unfair system of having the car returned with the tank empty. They charge 72 euro for the full tank, thus charging for fuel they didn't buy. This amounts to making unfair profits particularly on a small island where most people would be unlikely to use more than half a tank. I was there for two weeks and was very happy to return the car with the fuel warning light showing!

Scam

I read a number of reviews and thought I would be ok..... I should of trusted my gut.

I read all the T&C's as recommend on a number of sites and took everything required as stated by Holiday Autos. I had purchased the Additional Insurance cover from Holiday Autos but was told that it was not valid with the car rental company and would need to purchase additional insurance with them to cover such things as Windows, Tyres, undercarriage etc. I was also told that I needed to put down and 800 Euro deposit when the Car Rental Booking form from Holiday Autos clearly stated 600 euros.

The frustrations I had was I paid for a service I did not get and that the amount of deposit required was not as stated. The 200 euros was not an issue, but its the principal of the matter.

Unhappy!

Four cars, no problems

We used Holiday Autos to book four cars for our Australian holiday in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. All were waiting for us at the airport with no hassle whatsoever. We even had a free upgrade in Melbourne. We chose Holiday Autos mainly on price, but were very impressed with their efficiency and would certainly use them again.

Efficient car rental service in South Africa

Prompt and efficient pick-up at Hertz airport offices in Cape Town and drop-off at Port Elizabeth. Very satisfactory car (category as booked on-line through Holiday Autos). Deposit returned to credit card account immediately after return. A good experience overall.

Car was fine- wait time for pick up at Heathrow was ridiculous!!

All was good with car, but we were made to be very very late for an appointment because of the 3/4 hour wait for shuttle pick up!!!! No apology or explanation .... So sad too bad attitude from driver.
Multiple small scrapes and dents were not included on the sign out form and we had to push to get them included - this made us even later.
On returning the car, a previously mended chip in the windscreen was tried to be blamed on us... Thank goodness a windscreen company was there to confirm it was an old repair.
Booking process was fine, they just need pick up their act!

excellent service, although the car had seen better days...

Very straight forward and clear online booking. Collection at Lanzarote airport was easy, with only a short wait at the desk. The car was clean but not exactly in showroom condition as it had over 100,000 km on the clock. It was a bit tatty around the edges but this wasn't a motoring holiday and it provided reliable service to the beach and shops for the 2 weeks. All in all good value for money.

Hassle free service

Very helpful staff. No pressure to buy this or that extra insurance, GPS or whatever. Did mention the device to to stick to the windscreen get you through the electronic tolls, which I did hire, but very much offered as a service. no pressure. Fuel policy explained carefully. I took the "return full" option which worked well for me. Choice of cars to drive away. Upon return simple handover. Again, friendly helpful staff. No rush to take out bags, repack stuff etc. Booked another car with them for Florida in 2 weeks time.

Simple to use and you get what you order.

Very pleased with Holiday Autos from selecting the car through to the service provided by actual car hire company. Even made a post order request which was dealt with quickly and efficiently. 2nd time I've used them and would definitely use again and recommend to anyone who wants a quality and cost effective car hire service.
