I bought a Meaco dehumidifier in January of 2010 and ran it about twice a week for an hour or two at a time. After 2 months of this light use it stopped working - the heating element failed.
It was repaired under warranty. (Like another reviewer, I was given a 10 hour time slot for delivery and the courier turned up the next day.) This was in April and I didn't use the machine again until this winter.
After 2 months light usage the heating element has failed again!
On phoning Meaco I was informed that, although I had only used it for 4 months light use in total, as it was out of warranty, I would have to pay £70 to have it fixed.
When I asked what was the expected life of these dehumidifiers, I was told by the general manager "at least 5 years if not considerably longer". The company's owner stated that it should last "several years" and that I had "just been incredibly unlucky".
I inferred from these statements that they both must surely consider then that they had sold me a faulty machine. But on asking them about this they have completely broken off communication.
Like the above reviewer, I notice that my review of the product is suspiciously absent from Meaco.com
I notice the only 1 star reviews they allow are those which suggest buying an alternative from Meaco!
Rather than pay them to repair this crap again, I notice a British company called Ebac making dehumidifiers in the UK with a free 5 year warranty. I shall not reward Meaco's dishonesty and failure but put my £70 towards a replacement from a company that believes in its products.
Meaco – substandard products with appalling contempt
The dehumidifier worked fine until the very end of its warranty when it began to leak. I contacted Meaco for advice and they failed to advise me of the simple, easy-to-solve blockage that they later tried to charge me £70 to repair. This fee was immediately discounted to £35 when I refused to pay.
The unit was damaged in transit (my fault according to Meaco- I should have used bubble wrap). They kept my machine for over 3 weeks for a simple repair job.
They dismantled my unit without first asking me. They replaced my unit with another of a different colour, again, without asking me. They won't give you accurate courier timeslots. I'll never buy from them again and I do not recommend them.
Firstly I would like to say that mostly the service from Meaco has been very good, it however progressively became worse. The dehumidifier though was not so great from the beginning.
It was noisier than I expected it to be given the description, even when running on low. I did not get much chance to test it though as it worked for about 15 minutes before it went bang and the fan stopped working. Red check light was lit which meant I had to return it to the retailer.
It also gave off a nasty unhealthy plastic smell from the start which might would have gotten better with time but I never had a chance to find out.
The plastics that the unit was made of is also looked and felt cheap and it did not feel like value for money.
The wattage used on Turbo mode was 736W according to my very accurate inline power meter and not 620W as listed in the Technical Data on their website.
Meaco gave me a refund as I was not prepared to waste anymore of my time with this product.
So I am back to using my compressor based dehumidifier that I have been using for the last 2 years.
The main reason for my bad review is that when I tried to post my honest negative review on their website they refused to put it up. They pretended they were too busy and after 3 weeks of me hassling them they lost my review. I think this is very dodgy to only put up the good reviews of their products and for this reason I will do not trust them.
