Online booking for 2 tyres and Mot was not Tiresome 555

This is an edit version of the transcript of my chat with the company rep a National Tyres called David:
Hello anil My name is David, how can I help you?

I am booking online for 2 avon tyres and mot with an oil change how do I apply in the in branch discount voucher of 10% off for tghe oil change?
David says:
In branch vouchers can only be used in branch.
anil says:
I understand then I shoukld remove the oil change from my basket then, also 50% off wheel alignment, Icurrently also have 2 winter tyres on the front axle and have declined the casing disposal fee as they have plenty of tread left so I will be able to take them away?
David says:
Yes you can take them if you like.
anil says:
If I use the Wheel alignment will still need to have the wheel balancing as a separate item? and should i remove the oil change from my basket only shows discount on mot 7.58 and current total158.58
David says:
Yes you would.
anil says:
Ok will do, I am currently oversea and cannot ring the milton Keynes branch until I get back on the 2nd of May. Is there an email address to contact the branch directly, my overseas no is +66xxxxxxxx

The branch will not be able to call you overseas. You will be able to complete your order online.

Ok, will do but as regards additional in Branch promotions I will speak with them on my return and they will be able to add these to my pre-arranged booking, is that correct and I can use the various in branch voucher as required, is that correct?

The branch vouchers can only be used on orders placed in the branch, they cannot be added to online orders.

having used your services for quite a while, also recommending to other family members (5) who have ALL told me that the experiance was painless. Appalling customer service!

In summary:

National's Northenden branch:
1) Incapable of correctly balancing wheels
2) Extremely poor customer service
3) Oversell, upsell, and sneak things onto customer's bills without their knowledge

National's wider Customer Service:
1) Don't respond to tweets
2) Don't respond to emails


In detail:

I took my car into National's Northenden branch for them to look at one of my rear tyres that I was having to pump up every 3-4 weeks.

There was a puncture and so I needed a new tyre. Fair enough.

However, the technician also said that my other rear tyre also needed replacing as it was worn.

Now, just 5 days earlier my car had it's annual full service & MOT at a Ford garage. There were NO advisories on my new MOT certificate at all, yet National's view was that I needed a new tyres. I was not entirely satisfied with this, but reluctantly agreed and forked out to have two new tyres fitted.

When I next drove my car for the first time since having two new tyres fitted, the moment I took it on the motorway, there was a vigorous vibration in the whole car.

I immediately drove it back to National's Northenden branch.

I saw the same technician that dealt with my car two days previous, and explained the problem to him, saying that I didn't think the wheels had been correctly balanced.

He said that if I was feeling a vibration in the steeling wheel, it would be a balancing issue with the front wheels (which hadn't been touched), and therefore, if he wanted me to look at them, I would have to pay for it!!!

I told him that was unacceptable, as I knew that the issue was not with the front wheels, as these hadn't been touched.

After discussions with a manager, they agreed to check the balance of the two rear tyres they had fitted on Saturday.

They concluded that one of my rear rims was "bent" and that I must have driven over a pot hole!

My house is less than 1 mile away from their Northenden branch. Following the fitting of the new tyres, my car was driven home (less than 1 mile), where it stayed on my drive for the next day, until I drove it on the motorway the following morning (and my house is also less than 1 mile away from the motorway too).

I did not encounter any "pot holes" on either the short journey home, or from home to the motorway, and the "vibration" was not present the night before I took it into National's Northenden branch.

Therefore, there are two possibilities:
1) The rim was damaged during the changing of my tyres,
2) or... there was existing damage to the rim, yet after new tyres were fitted, the wheels were then not correctly balanced accordingly.

Either way, National's Northenden branch, and manager, were totally unwilling to accept even the possibility that they had damaged the rim or not correctly balanced the tyres upon my first visit.

His outright view was that it was entirely my fault, and that I must have hit a pot hole - no other possible explanation was acceptable to him. He gave me a whole spiel about how their equipment isn't capable of damaging rims, and how they change 25+ tyres a day without any problems, etc.

His attitude and customer service was appalling!!

My car was running fine before I took it into National, yet after a visit to their Northenden branch, my car was not running fine, as the wheels had not been correctly balanced.

Now, after a second visit to National's Northenden branch they have rebalanced the wheels, however I still don't feel that this is as good as it was before my first visit to National.

In addition, looking at my bill from National, I have been charged an additional £7.50 per tyre (i.e. £15) for "National Tyre Guarantee". I wasn't asked if I wanted this, or made aware of it it's just been underhandedly added to my bill without my knowledge or consent!

According to National's literature, "all new tyres carry an unlimited mileage guarantee against manufacturing defects throughout the legal life of the tyre" - it does not say that this guarantee comes at an additional cost!!

There is reference in their literature to an optional "Accidental Lifetime Damage Guarantee" which "can be purchased at an additional charge". This appears to have been added to my bill, however, it has been added without my knowledge or consent!

It feels very much that National's Northenden branch is more focused on up-selling than it is on customer service (I don't believe I needed a second new tyre, £15 has been sneaked onto my bill for something I didn't ask for/what, and when I took my car back in for them to fix the balancing issue, the initial response was "there'll be a charge" for them to look at correcting an issue they caused!)

In relation to National's wider customer service:
That afternoon I Tweeted National (@nationaltyres) to complain - over a week later, no response - it appears that they totally ignore customers on Twitter, and instead post pictures of shiny cars on their Twitter feed!

I also emailed a detailed formal complaint - yet over a week later and I am still to receive a response to my complaint! ...meanwhile I still don't believe my tyres are correctly balanced!

VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL ROUND!! - WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!
