When we were looking at setting up our Aromatherapy webshop we took the advice of Kevin Partner in his book ‘How to set up an online Business’ where he recommends Nochex in both his 2013 and 2014 editions. He states that having added Nochex as a method of payment alongside one of the big names he noticed a big improvement in the conversion rate on his site. For us Nochex were able to provide both payment processor, for debit and credit cards, and the necessary Merchant Account in one. We were particularly impressed by the contact we had with the accounts team and the ease with which we guided through the process of account set up. We had no previous business track record but were merely asked to submit details of our business and products. The company is British and uses the highest commercially available encryption key length of 256-bits for ‘information in transit’ – re-assuring for us and our customers! Being a new trader there is of course a period of retention to cover customer complaint or fraudulent payment but we were clear on this from our research. We have had no problems with Nochex and would recommend them.
We have been using Nochex to accept Credit/Debit card payments over our website since 2009.
As a reasonably sized UK hosting company, we often get users from around the world trying to purchase services with stolen cards, thankfully nochex do a great job at blocking these and helping to recover chargebacks.
They have phone support which is answered quickly and by a UK operator which is vital for us as, in contrast the other payment processors we have used are often not available due to the timezone difference or simply don't have a contact number.
Regarding the negative reviews below referencing nochex holding your money, please read the below as it explains why this happens.
If you take an account with them, you are often asked to have a retainer in your account (especially if your business is classed as high risk). If a stolen card is used on your site and you have not used the correct security procedures (e.g. verified by visa, mastercard secure code, address check etc), the card holders bank can request that the money is sent back.
Nochex will help fight this chargeback for you and try to prove to the bank you did all you could to check it was genuine (and very often they win) but sadly the banks have the final say.
This is where the retainer comes in, if a charge back is successful, nochex will use your retainer to pay the bank (this is no different than paypal where they simply just take the money out of your bank and from experience nochex seem to try harder to win your case).
Any customer who has bought something from you can complain to the bank for up to 6 months after the purchase to try and get the money back. This is why nochex will keep your retainer for a while after your account is closed. Once this time is passed you will get your retainer back.
We used to have two nochex accounts (only need one now) and we too had to wait for our £1000 retainer to be returned but this is just the nature of the business and if you are serious about trading online, is something you will need to accept. After the given timeframe, it was returned as no chargebacks were made.
Overall we would recommend nochex and we hope the above helps others when considering to use nochex.
I wasnt surprised by the recent email from my account manager stating that "i know you havent used your account in over 4 months and recieved no payments since then, we are going to close your account and keep your money for 180 days!" Marvelous.... Funny really as i had read online about these fools and when on the phone with them i half laughed with the customer service staff about this 180 day rule, at the time she stated it shouldnt be a problem as the account had been inactive.
Anyway we have been with WorldPay now for 5 months who now look after all our 5 websites and i had a massive saving... easy to reach customer service and payment in my account in 3 days! Any one considering Nochex.... dont! Use Worldpay or SagePay instead!
I have used Nochex for my company online transactions for a couple of years now and have nothing but praise for the services they provide. There is no annual fee, money drawn from my Nochex account is paid into my bank account in just a few days and the security checks made when transactions are made are thorough.
As a member of NOCHEX for nearly 3 years we recently got told i have to cease trading with them as we sell stickers. Yes you read that right we sell stickers for consoles which is apparently against there rules as it is classed as modifying. Hmmmm
This is from Harry of the compliance team
"I would like to point out that the modding of games consoles and peripheriphals or any variation of this activity is not permitted through our system so please refrain from attempting to use our service for this type of trading activity in the future."
Here was my reply
"How is putting a VINYL SKIN on a device or changing the colour of any issue"
"As suggested, the modification of games consoles or games console peripheriphals in any variation is not permitted through our system and therefore you will not be able to trade though this site or any other site which takes part in this type of activity."
"All my sites do and always have done, the past 3 years if you want to check your records."
"I’m afraid we cannot reverse this decision and the fact you may have used previous account for this activity does not come into our consideration."
So for selling stickers we got banned LOL, says it all really about this company. We have recently got a stripe and WorldPay account and will now be saving roughly £2k a year.
Make up your own minds but i would not use this company nor recommend them again, the customer support is useless and they never hardly answer the phone, when they do they have attitude.
My header says it all use PayPal they are more efficient, easy to get hold of and make it easy for shoppers with instant access to funds. The rates are also very favourable if your turnover is reasonable. Nochex 1/10
The worst company that we have ever known!!! Don't touch them with a barge pole. They have left is in major doo doo. They said they had bad reports on our website, but no where as bad as the review s we have read on them!! We are off to Trading Standards and the fraud department in the morning. They rarely answer the phone, never tell you what's going on, leave you to guess!! Speak to you like you are dirt. We are having to close our website down now as we have no fund s to buy in new stock as they have closed our account. They are thieves and liars, and I hope they have a naff Christmas and New Year just like we will.
I have used Nochex since I first setup my business about 10 years ago. I have nothing but praise for the service that I have received throughout my time with Nochex. They even go out of their way to assist me before I have even requested it!
I have used PayPal as well but the service with Nochex is always better (and cheaper!) - with Nochex I have an account manager who I can call on the phone whenever I have an issue. It's great being able to speak to someone directly - I now use Nochex only.
Been using Nochex for a year now and I'm really pleased with their services! Not sure why the reviews on here are so mixed but I and several other people I know who also take business payments online all use Nochex and have had no complaints whatsoever. Easy to deal with, friendly, and helpful. I used to use PayPal but I've found Nochex to be much easier (and cheaper) to use. A great service and company.
Signed up ith them from google checkout as the system seemed better all well during the sales pitch and during the set up although it was very slow. However after about two weeks with them and after they have £1800 of my money in there account they freeze the account and close it no warning no email nothing we found out from one of our customers who was trying to pay. Awful service now they have £1800 of our money and say we have to wait 180 days. dont use no point we signed up with intuit pay and were online and taking payments within the hour much better service and oh i forgot to say these guys dont pick up phones at nochex probably phone the nochex customer support line 100 times no answer ever
I bought a Wowcher for a satchel from a local company, which is subject of another review. I was told that I would have to pay £7.00 postage through Nochex. That was 2 months with the company I got the bag from not sending the goods out. I opened up a complaint by submitting a "ticket". Since then I have sent numerous replies to Nochex with their attitude being "we've spoken to the company and they promise to send the goods out within the next 5 days, please contact us after then". So I wait, and reply and they send out a similar message, so I wait, and reply, and they send out a similar message. For some reason they are refusing to repay this money. Wowcher refunded me after giving the company a chance, but Nochex just keep saying they will speak to the company. I will NEVER use Nochex again.
I HAVE USED THEM FOR ABOUT 18 MONTHS, IN THE BEGINNING THEY DID RETAIN £200, BUT AFTER ABOUT 3 MONTHS I ASKED IF THAT COULD BE REDUCED TO £100 & THEY DID WITHOUT ANY QUESTIONS. THEY HAVE ALWAYS HELPED ME, THEY INSTALLED THEIR PAYMENT MODULE ONTO MY WEBSITE AS I DID NOT HAVE A CLUE! EACH TIME I HAVE WITHDRAWN FUNDS ITS IN MY ACCOUNT WITH 2-3 DAYS USUALLY 2 DAYS. I HAVE HAD NO END OF TROUBLE WITH PAYPAL, LIMITING MY ACCOUNT, FREEZING MONEY ECT 2 YEARS OF NONE STOP HASSLE!!! NOCHEX HAVE BEEN A BREATH OF FRESH AIR ;o)
I had been using NOCHEX in conjunction with a website I was running and although useful customers did not use it half as much as PAYPAL, however this is not the issue I have with NOCHEX. At all times I had to keep a minimum of £380 in the account to cover any potential chargeback.......no problem with that either.
However due to closing down this particular website I no longer needed the NOCHEX account but when I rang them to close it down I was told it would be 180 days to refund my money. I had to query this with the lady on the phone (who was very polite) but she confirmed that this was correct although she did say it could be a 'little' quicker.
Now bear in mind I have never had a charge back in the 2 years I had the account and I hadnt even put a transaction through in 3 months due to customers exclusively using other payment options. Seriously 180 days, that is a joke, I know interests rates are low but I would prefer the money in my account benefitting me not NOCHEX
I have been with this company for over four years and up until a week ago I was singing their praises, but suddenly they have a policy change and bam they are shutting my account, here's proof an email directly from them
Thank you for your reply.
We agree that your record with us has been impeccable and we certainly don’t believe there to be an issue in terms of financial risk on the account. However the change in policy does cover your business type and we have decided that we will no longer be providing services to businesses in this sector. The change in policy and resulting closure of your account has been a decision made at the highest level and I’m afraid that it is not something that is open to discussion or interpretation.

Now I have payment links all over the internet that are going to be dead. I am considering taking them to Court, if anyone wishes to join me please contact me.
I have been with Nochex now for about 4 months, and all i can say is they have been great. I have a merchant account and yes it cost me £50, but some of the others charge a set up fee so this is no different. All i can say is my experience is good, and my website has certainly benefitted from having it, it now accounts for 40% of all sales.
Website is full of comparisons between the free, entry level Seller account for lower value transactions and the Merchant Account with a £50 setup fee. Nochex say they "would like to offer our Seller Account services to as many types of business as possible." However it isn't until you have selected Seller Account and told it what your company type is that there is any mention of if currently being unavailable and that Nochex "apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to offer you a superior Merchant account".
Asked them whether Seller is coming back to be basically told "Oh, it will be back sometime, I don't know when, but have you considered our Merchant account?"
Yes, I have considered it - when I am good and ready to pay £50 to set up. In the meantime, I want the free Seller account that is described in great detail on the website and don't appreciate what feels like quite a hard sell on the Merchant account. If you can't offer Seller accounts, take them off the site or make it clear from the off they are not available now.
They have been warned and I have given a full and frank statement to the police about these international villians,,,they are part of the whole scam with suppliers..refusing to isssue credits on faulty goods.. nochex.com JIF-348758 check this ticket reference out and give me back my money
