They sold me a £100 cage for the degus which turned out to be way too small. The reaction I've got on this was that it is the RSPCA minimum. Which it is not. They also seem to know nothing about them, constantly miss-sexing them so people end up with an unwanted litter. It's pathetic to see the animals in the shops in very small cages, and them being willing to sell them per one degu. Always keep them in pairs. Please do NOT buy from, thus promoting, this shop.
I've build my girls a really big cage, for less money than the cage PAH sold me.
I went to Pets at Home to buy 2 Goldfish and was asked was size my tank was, explained it was around the same size as their display tanks. Was told that I could only buy one due to the size of my tank. The display tanks each contained around 40 fish. When I pointed this out to the assistant he advised that they only keep that number of fish in a tank short term. Allowing for the cold water and tropical fish the store probably held 800 fish in 20 tanks. What is short term? 1 week, 1 month? Do they sell this number of fish? Unlikely. Perhaps they just kill them off after their"short term" is up. Will never set foot in any of their stores ever again.
Dealing with pets at home over the years through their various name changes has been a bit of a mixed bag of experiences, but generally if you find the right member of staff, they are extremely helpful.
This was the experience at my local store when there was an online offer on which was not in the store. The staff member suggested that i did a click and collect on the internet store to save myself 20% on the store price. I had to wait a few minutes for them to receive the order, but saved £20 in the process.
To be fair, when I had a problem with some fish I bought from them, they were pretty good about supplying free of charge treatment for them to remove the parasites they had, but I would be very careful in future to check any livestock bought.
I always go there for my fish, they have experienced staff there, if one of them isnt too sure he'll go get the 'fish expert' always gives good advice of which fish can go with what. They have ordered me fish in when they dont stock them. Guisley chain
I hate Halfords for car bits, but as car shops go you are limited and have no choice, its halfords, ebay or a small independant shop ....well pets at home are same , everything there you could possibly need for your pet. But overpriced because they are market leaders. IF possible I advocate searching the web ie ebay ,amazon and checking for your pets collars leads, cages, food there instead by comparison. In the high street they are dominant , I like the fact they have a chilled attitude and staff are friendly and everything is at hand but for all its a big shop, the actual range was strangely a bit rubbish for pet shampoo and grooming i had much more success on ebay!!
I'm giving this 3 stars based on the southend airport branch. Its a nice large store with plenty of animals/food and accessories. The only downside is there reptile section, personally when im looking for accessories for my chameleons vivarium I use a reptile specific shop but I have used this petshop for live food (locusts, crickets, worms) when I've run out as its local. I think it could benefit from having more live food in stock as well as more accessories, Heat lamps, Heat mats, Humidity and temp gauges etc. Also there only ever seems to be one staff member upstairs in the aquarium/reptile area and there always busy with someone talking about fish. Would be nice to see afew more people walking around available to talk to.
About the only place I can buy all types of dog food and treats that no one else stocks. The staff are always very helpful, I am talking about the Bromborough Wirral branch but I have been elsewhere and same helpful staff.
At the moment pets at home are offering 3 for 2 on certain dog foods which makes a good bargain. They often have offers and free delivery. Well worth shopping with them. I run my own home boarding for dogs and get a lot of my supplies from here.
Expensive, and some poor quality. but not too bad.
Some of the offers on the internet dont work and i ended up cancelling some of my order. They do 3 for 2 on kitten food and then adult cat biscuits. I have a Kitten, so I couldnt take part in the offer.
Having 4 dogs pets at home prove VERY expensive! Shope around the net for deals! MOST companies offer free delivery on sacks of food over 15kgs, you have to spend a lot more with pets at home for a similar offer!
I trust pets at home because it's one of the biggest pet retailers in the UK with many stores around the UK. However, the online experience is pretty rubbish. I have ordered from Pets At Home many times and on several occassions they have cancelled items without notifying me and forgotton items and also given me damaged goods. It can be a HASSLE at times!! If there was a cheap alternative, I would definiately switch. Not happy with their service AT ALL. Disappointed.
Some of the biggest retailers in the UK have absolutely terrible eCommerce sites, but Pets At Home's online store is, in my opinon, excellent.
It's easy to use, has a huge choice of goods, and loads of information and product detail.
The only complaint I'd have about them is that I have found lots of items in their stores which, when I've gone online to buy, have been more expensive! Very frustrating, and it prevented me spending £350 with them on an aquarium.
