Actual service isn't bad, however it is when something is damaged or goes missing.

The service offered by Royal Mail is generally very efficient. As a business, I have never had anything go missing using the Signed For and Signed For/Tracked International Services. I have had the odd thing arrive damaged (very rarely), and when this happens the service is very poor. The claims form takes a very long time to fill out, and then they reply by either refusing to pay out or send a cheque for an amount much smaller than the items value although you have provided everything they have asked for - they basically make it not even worth out claiming money unless it is a very large amount (obviously this is deliberate).

I recommend them however make sure you always use a service which requires a signature or has tracking. If it goes missing, it will be very difficult to claim. I haven't used their direct competitors so cannot comment on that. I have used UPS and they are brilliant, but only suitable for large parcels.

Very poor customer service and lack of respect for customers

I sold an item through eBay in the amount of 29.00 pounds. I sent by Royal Mail SIGNED FOR. The buyer contacted me because time was passing and the item never arrived. In the Royal Mail tracking number information kept saying that the item was in transit. I ended up returning the money to the buyer.
I complained to Royal Mail with all documentary evidence required by them. After more than a month, I get a letter from Royal Mail Customer Service informing me that my case was closed because they tried to contact the buyer by letter and not received a reply. They say in the letter that the Royal Mail take for granted that the item was delivered. Also, as an apology for the lack of signature on delivery, sent me a book of 6 first class stamps.
I'm not stupid to be happy about this final. Legal advice and action .... next step from Monday.

dire

just been condescended to over the phone by customer helpline person. Have been told that a package they were unable to deliver to me has been destroyed and that I won't be able to get a refund for it. Thanks Royal Mail. Thanks for your arbitrary red tape and rubbish

Also, I have worked for them. They don't give a crap about their employees. The HR team there messed up the start dates of their Christmas workers and didn't do anything to compensate or make up for this, though it messed up our finances, especially the finances of those who were on benefits and had signed off. They also messed up our shift patterns and payed us minimum wage for anti-social hours employment. Hate them.

Following Parse*oleFarce down the pan...

Royal Mail has historically offered an outstanding postal service to all parts of the UK, particularly vital to the remoter and most economically disadvantaged areas. But over the last few years, a succession of ridiculous price hikes, reductions in compensation terms and over-complicated sizing rules has changed all that silly social nonsense.

A year ago, Royal Mail abandoned its longstanding 'Standard Parcel' service, without any public consultation. The result is that customers sending larger inland parcels are now left at the mercy of Parse*oleFarce (currently ranked at rock bottom #52 out of 52), having to pay more than twice as much for a destructive service that takes more than twice as long.

Other reviewers have rightly complained about the disgraceful way that both companies impound parcels from overseas and then hold them to ransom until VAT and a whopping handling fee are paid. In the old days, such items used to be delivered c.o.d., thus avoiding the unnecessary delays we all now experience.

Since last year, there has been a very sinister new development in Royal Mail’s behaviour. They seem to think that they’ve become a part of MI6, and have taken to randomly scanning and impounding inland parcels, then shipping them off hundreds of miles to Belfast for them to be opened by an “authorised” snooper.

Just before Christmas, Amazon dispatched two parcels to me from their Dunfermline warehouse. Both contained cooking oils and bore appropriate goods exemption shipping labels to this effect. They were scanned at Inverness, flagged as potentially hazardous and duly shipped off to Belfast for examination. The distance involved is around 250 miles each way, over land and sea. Royal Mail tells me that Belfast is their only secure UK location with such a license to snoop.

Having pried into these two parcels and found nothing untoward, they were returned to Inverness for onward delivery… FIVE WEEKS LATER!!!

After complaining to Royal Mail and extracting a reluctant apology and meagre compensation, exactly the same thing has just happened again (March 2014). After protesting about this recurrence, I've been told to get lost by the Chairman's office!

The delays and inconvenience are bad enough, but this newly-introduced procedure begs the question: what sort of deranged imbecile would identify a “dangerous” package and then ship it overseas to have a look? The system is clearly idiotic and poses a very real threat to public safety. Can Royal Mail management really be so irresponsible and dim-witted? And have Ofcom and HM Govt lost the plot altogether by letting them get away with this?

Royal Mail believe it’s perfectly OK to stop any parcel and then open and rifle through customers’ confidential post without any need to seek judicial authority. They evidently don’t trust their customers. You can’t post a parcel these days without being interrogated over its contents. Now they think that jobsworth transport regulations give them the right to poke their noses into any package they want and then take weeks to eventually deliver, all without any attempt to notify either sender or recipient.

Amazon have already announced the introduction of their own delivery network. Royal Mail are about to lose their biggest corporate client and they just couldn't care less.

Not a lot of “love, love, love”, I’m afraid. This once great institution is heading for the U-bend and will soon be history. If I owned shares, I'd be offloading them ASAP.

Shameful...

Guaranteed Next Day Special Delivery is the a complete and utter rip off. Royal Mail should be truly ashamed of themselves. And yes, I am going to tar them all with the same brush until things improve. Apologies are simply not good enough anymore. I want my money back - simple as that - because I did not get the service I had paid for under contract. Not only did I spend half my working day waiting for my urgent parcel to be delivered - and to be signed for - but within seconds of the 9am cut-off point the status was updated as "undelivered" and "Something for you" card was left behind. NO POSTMAN CAME! OF COURSE NO CARD WAS LEFT! Why on earth would I search high and low for this illusive card when I should have known better that Royal Mail are cowardly liars. Calling their customer service was a real joy! "You can collect your parcel at the local office with the calling card left for you." No, I can't because NO CARD WAS LEFT! Only option now is to wait another TWO DAYS for the item to be re-delivered (because I obviously wasn't paying attention and waiting for it the first time, you see.) FOUR DAYS for a service that should have taken less than 24 hours. That is IF the parcel actually arrives this time. I'm ready to let all hell loose. Either way the damage is done and I want my money back, but it's going to be a real ball ache and I'd rather push pins under my fingernails.

A pension scheme that deals with some post at a very considerable cost!

Very expensive nowadays - £14 to send a small parcel second class approx. 200 miles? Where are the economies of scale? They have to pay for the pension scheme I suppose. Will do all I can to avoid using them in future.

RIDICULOUS SIZING RULES

If you want to avoid disappointment, don't trust Royal Mail to deliver greetings cards to your loved ones & friends. As we all know, cards weigh very little (probably less than half of the weight allowance of a normal 1st or 2nd class stamp) & they are not very thick, however it is quite likely that, although they are very similar to the maximum size covered by normal 1st & 2nd class letter stamps, they are likely to be one or two mm over the maximum size allowable in Royal Mail's ridiculous sizing policy! This means that, as well as being charged the extra postage that you are deemed to have underpaid, you will also be charged a £1 handling fee, PLUS & most importantly, your card will take well over a week to arrive at it's destination. This means that it will, almost certainly, arrive after the special occasion it was intended to add to the joy of. Far from helping it's customers to send a little bit of happiness through the post, Royal Mail will cause huge disappointment. It's obvious when it's a greetings card, can't you use a little bit of common sense Royal Mail?

Royal Mail?? Shouldn't they be called Royal FAIL!!!

I am Sick of Royal Mail & was completely ASTOUNDED when I have just spotted that they were rated 3rd top out of 12 different courier/postal companies in a MSE poll.
I have had problems for years with them & it would take forever to explain all but it started when I explained a problem with a Manager at a local sorting office a few years back & got a reply off "Well what do you expect me to do about it?"
But they have got steadily Worse over the last few months.
In 3 months I have had the experience of 3 Recorded deliveries with an APPALLING delivery success rate. I have sent 2 Recorded deliveries & they Lost 1!!
And I was supposed to receive 1 Recorded Delivery & they lost that.
Now I'm not pointing any fingers here as I do not have a shred of proof to do so, but if we send items by Recorded delivery is it usually because they are either Important or Valuable?? Now isn't it then the equivalent to putting a sticker on the package saying "I'm worth a few bob, please steal me??" Or maybe its just my suspicious mind & they really do just vanish into thin air.
NOW, When YOU Are unfortunate & DO lose an item courtesy of Royal Mail, please go to the local post office (After you have wasted Loads of your time phoning their 0845 numbers & giving them some More of your money) ask them for a form to make a claim, take it home with you, have a read of it, & then Tear it up as they will bend over backwards to avoid paying at all costs, it will take you a lifetime & you will end up wishing you had never bothered in the 1st place.
Oh & if you do send an item & have to declare the value, think of the absolute bare minimum you could ever think it could be worth & tell them that figure, because that is what they value your item at.
I am a small business & I try to avoid using Royal Mail Whenever Possible & Really dread it when I do have to use them & I'm on tenderhooks hoping it isn't going to get "Lost".
As well as their Appalling service they were already more expensive & have just increased their prices yet again!!!
Now, I'm off to give the Professional delivery companies their Well deserved Good feedback for their Excellent services.

Waste of space

I am very angry with Royal Mail as they have lost my iPhone which I sent off for repair.

I paid for Signed For first class recorded delivery which cost me about £4.00 and would have thought it would have arrived the next day. Not a chance!!! I am still waiting for it to be delivered to company who is repairing my phone. I have continually logged onto the Royal Mail Track and Trace section of their site and put in my Reference number but I keep getting the same message "Information on your Royal Mail Signed For™ item is not yet available.". You would think that you would be able to track the parcel to see where it is at all times. I know you can with TNT so why not RM?

What really frustrates me is that I could have sent it via a courier for about a quid more and it would have got there the next day and i would have my phone back by now. I WILL NOT BE USING ROYAL MAIL TO SEND A PARCEL EVER AGAIN!!

Poor and Shocking

After sending important documents by recorded delivery to be checked by a third party to be correct, the documents were sent back to me by recorded delivery and never arrived. When tracked by the post office they said they had been returned to sender as not delivered. These documents have not been returned to the sender and are deemed as lost by the post office who have told me today that all recorded delivery means is that you sign for the letter as to say you have received it and they said it should have been sent by special delivery as recorded delivery is not worth using. Delivery was not attempted and no card has been left to say an attempt to deliver was ever made. I would not trust these people with any documents of value at all. Please be warned they are useless at anything other than delivering junk mail!

Now the most expensive service for anything other than letters and small international parcels.

Royal Mail have now lost all my small parcel business as my Hermes only charge £2.78 for a tracked delivery on packets under 1kg (using drop off). Royal mail charge £2.80 for second class post which is not tracked.
Hermes previously beat them hands down before the 31.03.14 price rises on parcels over 2kg.
I now only use them for letters, large letters, and sending items abroad.
They have no interest in helping the small business, their employees, and members of the public, or in keeping local post offices open.
Their profit greed, complacency, and not listening to their customers will be their demise.

Rude Customer service and mis-selling of services

1st They dropped cards through my letter box saying that they had tried to deliver and we were not in....I took the day off work to wait for this parcel as it was guaranteed by 1pm and even if not I had been tracking the item....This has happened 4 times in the last 2 months. I complained about it and all they did was give me a shoddy apology without any details of how they were gonna make the service better!!! and they take your phone number for the redelivery and never use it. Just put the card in with wrong info.
2. The customer service adviser 'Margaret@ I have not forgotten her name as I am still raging over how she spoke to me!!! worked in customer service and never spoke to anyone like that. You are meant to build a rapport with a customer and solve their problems...not be uninterested, interrupted me while I spoke and downright rude...I was soo frustrated and was almost screaming at MARGARET. This is a service I am paying for and will not have parcels delivered by royal mail ever again. whichever company does not have an alternative courier I simply won't buy the item.....so sad that my letters have to come via them....pitiful service and rude and arrogant while they take your money. Legal thieves!!!! as they then charge you £1.50 per parcel/item if you need it delivered to your local post office! Made a complaint about MARGARET and had no response so beware she is still reigning terror on the ROYAL MAIL CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE!!!

I have had No problems with RM

I Have sent many Parcels using standard and confirmed via RM with no problems.
I do understand that mistakes do happen with any courier service, and hope that the compensation process would be easy for Lost or Damaged Parcel's.
Now RM have increased their Prices again since Privatisation (Greedy Share Holders) I am looking for another courier service, but at the end of the day they all have their Faults

UNRLIABLE

when i post my mail it very rearly gets their first class and the same when i recive post same with parcels. when i contacted royale mail the member of staff told me its not guranteed unless you pay for special service how can they offer first class post when they cant gurantee it if they cant provide you with a first class service they should not offer it and just start doing 2nd class. when i have used curier company i find them much more efficiant reliable than royal mail and for parcels much more competifly priced in most cases. on the royal mail website it claims to offer a """Royal Mail aims to provide you with a reliable and consistent service at all times""" think they seriesly need to review this !!!!

No sign of first class packet after nearly a week!

My Dad sent 6 screws in the post 1st class 6 days ago and they have still not arrived. You would expect them to arrive in a day or two. They only have to travel 40 miles from Lancaster to Bolton! Shouldn't be difficult Royal Mail!
