Suncar strike again! Absolute thieveing so-and-so's. They confirmed my rental, then cancelled it at the last moment, then went ahead and took my money (visa debit). The only 2 emails I've gotten from them have been some nonsense about systems being down and finance dept having technical difficulties.
I've been trying to contact the retailer dispute people at my card company but have had no luck so far. I'll be damned if I let them get away with this though.
PLEASE PLEASE no one use Suncar/Decode Car Hire - they are thieves and will rob you without blinking twice.
I paid in full (luckily by credit card) prior to going away, when we arrived in Athens with our 3yo and 1yo we were told by the representative that no payment had been received and we had to pay again or we couldn't havethe car! Phoned Suncar who said they would sort it out but I had to leave a swiped cedit card slip, next day it was paid in. Couldn't contact suncar once back in UK they only answer international calls. Their parent compay is DECODE CAR HIRE, they debited my credit card in the uk. Once back in teh uk they said it would take 28 working days for the refund, nothing happened but the credit card company recovered funds.
Seems they have done this scam all over teh place but I really feel DECODE CAR HIRE are behind this and advise people to avoid them like the plague too!!!!
Like many others we have been ripped off too.
we made 2 separate bookings with Suncar and paid both in full only to find out that they didn't pay the car rental companies. We had to fork out more money and are now trying to get our money back via the credit card company. Not the way to start a 5 week holiday from the other side of the world.
Why is the company of crooks able to take peoples money? There is no way they should be in business.
DON'T USE THEM......Like others, I booked a car at a great price (too good to be true??) for 11 days with Suncar to pick up at Alicante airport for October half term holidays. Got there - local company tell me they have not been paid, they can't get any response from Suncar and I need to pay again - thankfully, the local company was small, reputable and did not overcharge me. However now I'm entering into battle to get my money back....... I see now that I am not alone and I will return to using my previous car hire arrangements in future.......
If you unfortunately use this company they will probably take your money and not provide any service. Forget writing to them or emailing as they never reply.
Contact your bank and ask them to "chargeback" (visa debit). This will refund your money with 45 days. My bank Nationwide told me they are finding this company are responsible for many complaints. All have been charged back from their bank in Riga.
In short this company is a bunch of crooks
CALL YOUR CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD PROVIDER, ASK THEM FOR THE DISPUTE AND CHARGEBACK`S DEPARTMENT.
You have to write all of your details, what happaned, attach your confirmation or any email between you and the suncar company!
We had the same problem, we get back the money from the credit card provider!
I can't believe we got scammed by this company - I thought I'd checked them out but now I can see their (attractive) website has hardly any contact details, and I should (on hindsight) never have paid for a car rental upfront. We booked a car with Budget (via Suncar) for £138 in May and when we came to pick up the car in August, Budget refused to accept the prepaid voucher. I've contacted Budget because to be honest they were very unhelpful about the whole thing. I emailed Suncar and was assured I'd get a refund, but of course no such thing has happened. When you contact the telephone number on the paperwork it rings out, and now the emails are bouncing back with a (badly written) autoresponse.

car with another company (which was more expensive). Since I had returned to
UK Suncar are not responding to my emails and their phone number is
permanently engaged. My advice to any prospective customers is to avoid
Suncar and use a more professional company who believe in good honest
customer service. warning - This company are still on the net trading

I booked two cars at the end of 2009 - a week picking up from Belfast in July 2010 and two weeks picking up from Faro in August 2010. We weren't told of any problems until arrival at Belfast where we told the only way to get the car was to pay again and claim back from Suncars. Surprise surprise the same thing happened three weeks later at Faro. I too have emailed, contacted complaints department, tried to 'chat' with them online and written to Watchdog. Luckily my credit card company have reimbursed the monies but I can't believe their website still allows you to book cars.
i have had same experience.booked with sun car large vehicle to pick up in alicante airport.48hours before pick up thry e.mailed car had been cancelled.had hell of a job to get another car at such short notice.went to avis in airport who found us a car not as big so it was a bit of a squeeze 4 adults and 3 kids .of course i had to pay out another £977. have tried phoning ,e.mails support chat line .have picked up various address s of sun cars decode etc.have written to watchdog,an d to action fraud.i have alsoe.mailed suncar saying to give me back my money into my bankaccount within 7 days if not i will be handing it bover to a lawyer and we will sue them for breach of contract and i will also inform the police. please any of you out there help me get rid of these scum bags.e.mail me barbara.mccallion@ssesurf.co.uk

I booked a car for Dec 2010 Aberdeen Airport, booked and paid on the 29th Aug 2010
Received e-mail that they were unable to accommodate this booking on the 9th September.
Made contact via the live support to be told I would receive a refund but this did not happen.
Tried numerous times to contact the company by telephone but telephones not answered
E-mailed the company regarding a refund of monies paid on the 29th Aug
Received an reply on the 24th Sept saying the monies had been taken by mistake!!!!!!! Technical fault
E-mailed asking for a date the monies would be credited back, no response.
E-mailed again to the complaints dept, no reply
E-mailed again stating I would be contacting my credit card company and reporting them to watchdog and Fraud alert. Guess what..... yes received a reply saying they would be respond in 24-72hrs.
I have already sent a report to Watchdog and alerted them (probably again)!!!! to all the forums (sure others have done this already)
This is now the 9th of Oct and I have still not received a refund.
How long are they going to get away with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Same position as everyone else, booked the car in april, £170 pounds was debited from my account. Went on holiday to spain last month, on arrival we went to pick up the car which we were told had not been paid for. We had no choice but to pay again. We have tried to ring suncar, with no reply, emailed them about 20 times with a couple of replies from them saying we would get our money back, but we are still wating 4 weeks later. we sent a copy of the reciept of payment (which we paid in spain) to them 2 weeks ago but we have not heard back since. Spoke to trading standards who said we need an address for the company before they can help (but they dont have an address) looks like we wont get our money back, they are rogues!
One employee contacted me some while ago, said that there is no use to ask for refund, because Decode Car Hire has bankrupt. :(
They use CarTravel affiliate system, don't reply to phone calls , to e-mails...
THIS COMPANY IS IN CAHOOTS WITH DECODE CAR HIRE. DO NOT MAKE A CAR HIRE RESERVATION WITH THEM! DO NOT PASS TO EITHER OF THEM ANY CREDIT CARD DETAILS. YOU WILL NOT GET THE CAR YOU RESERVED BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT PASS YOUR PAYMENT TO THE HIRE COMPANY THEY SAY YOUR BOOKING IS WITH. AVOID THEM AS YOU WOULD A PILE OF DOG DIRT ON THE PAVEMENT.
We were charged twice also, waiting for a reply but won't hold my breath!
Please inform Watchdog, trading standards, police and credit card company, the more people that complain the better, hopefully these dispicable crooks can be put away
I have been a little more fortunate with Suncar than some, I called them as I hadn't got my voucher and was e-mailed 18 hours before flying to say no cars were available, so made other arrangements. On return, found that the full amount of the rental had been taken from my card so tried to ring for refund - no reply. E-mail response said 'technical error - will refund as fast as possible, but 3 weeks on still waiting.

Asked the credit card company to refund, but they said that as Suncar have said that they will refund, not their problem - they will only act if Suncar refuse(!!!) so..... Suncar can promise, not deliver and the Card Co does nowt!
However, as there is no postal contact address on the web site, Suncar are TRADING ILLEGALLY and could be investigated by Trading Standards. As my amount falls below the £100 minimum, it doesn't enjoy the protection of section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act which means I'll have to try leaning on the Credit Card Co

I booked with Suncar in September for 4 day hire in November this year in Malaga. I had e-mail confirmation from them then I got an e-mail from the car hire company in Malaga to say they had not paid them, to book direct and dont use SUNCAR. I have copied this below.
When I sent this e-mail to Suncar they sent me e-mail after e-mail responding to me sayng "how can I help" with one operations manager after another, but nobody doing anything. This was until the funds had cleared for the car.
This was only 42 Euro so the money is not a the issue, it is that these people are thieves and people need telling. Their so called help line doesn't ever answer and simply put I think this is a shell company taking peoples money, they should be reported to the police.

The confirmation I received confirmed a diffeant vehicle so I contacted them and cancelled and was promised a full refund within 5 days. 15 days later still no refund. have tried emailing and telephoning but no reply and telephone rings once then goes engaged. THIS IS A SCAM - DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY. I AM REPORTING TO TRADING STANDARDS AND THE POLICE AS THIS AMOUNTS TO THEFT.
Used Suncars for our car hire in Portugal. Paid full amount in May. Received copy by email to take with us. Upon arrival at Faro were told by Airautos that they did not have payment (EVEN THOUGHT WE HAD PAPERWORK WITH PAID WRITTEN ON IT) and we had to pay again and get a refund from Suncars when we returned home.
Car had scratches ad broken reflector when we hired it which were marked on our hire agreement form.
Upon return to the airport we were told that we had to pay for a broken light - showed rep copy of hire form - but he said we would have to pay for the damage and he got abusive when we told him it was already there when we picked up the car.
Upon return to u.k. phoned Suncars re refund - they said we would be refunded but had to supply them with our bank account details and it would take up to 28 days - said we wanted the money back to our credit card - told they could not do this - thought this was strange.
Then received an invoice from Airautos stating they had debited our credit card with 200 euros for damage to car.
Contacted Suncars again -did not reply to emails - it is now nearly a month and we have received no refund - have reported to Watchdog and have forwarded info to Barclaycard for their help in getting our £400 refunded.
I thought we were of to a great start with a cheap deal from Suncar, but when we got home realised we were charged twice. I am still waiting on a refund and I am home two months . My advice don't use them.

We booked and paid (£275) on-line, we arrived at Antalya (Turkey) airport to be told by car rental company they had not been paid by Suncar and we had to pay again (£314) We were taken to the rental company office at 0200 hours, situated in an unlit back street, as we refused to pay in cash and used a credit card. This was not a pleasant experience. The car was supposed to be full of fuel but it was empty (fuel light on) and in poor condition (bodywork very dented and scratched. Interior dirty and had cigarette burns on seats) We contacted Barclaycard on return, hopefully they can get something back. Tried to phone the '24/7' phone numbers, but no answer. Suncar also operate as Decode in Riga, Latvia. Be very careful, would not recommend Suncar to anyone.
Hired a car through suncar this summer. Not only did Suncar deduct the full amount for the car hire, but so did the car hire company from which the car was hired. The car hire company confirmed that they had not received the funds from Suncar and when Suncar were contacted they confirmed this was the case and promised a full refund.
I am still waiting for the refund and Suncar have made every excuse under the sun (no pun intended) to avoiding to pay it.
This is a SCAM, particulalrly as all payments to Suncar are routed through Riga!

Like all the other entries on this site I have paid twice for the car rental. Once at the time of booking and once at our holiday destination on the false promise of a refund from Suncar.
On the rare occasions I have a response to my correspondence it has been to promise action very shortly....Under no circumstances should you book with this company.
I see here all those shitty reviews... didn'd know they are that bad. The first time I booked a car at their website on May, this year, received confirmation in a week. After hunting their representative, got an answer - we have a car for you and provided me with all the details. Well they could cancel my reservation, but didn't... After hearing different stories from my colleagues and also reading some crappy reviews about carrentals co uk and other brokerage companies about no charge backs and no received cars, I would stand for Suncar again, just because I hope I will receive the same care! Just my point of view...
I booked a car through suncar and paid the hire charge in full to them.
I received an emailed voucher to use at cargest car hire at Malaga airport Spain. All was fine and I used the car for 16 days and took it back unscathed.
The problem now is that suncar have not paid cargest and 3 weeks after returning from spain cargest are demanding payment from me, even though I paid suncar.
DO NOT USE SUNCAR.
I have informed Barclaycard and they cannot stop the payment to cargest as I had to show the card when I arrived at the rental desk.
I now have to go through the disputes process with barclaycard.
If anyone is still sceptical about this review just try the freephone number for suncar, you will find that you cant get through !!!!!! BEWARE YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!!!!
I see 9 reviws on Suncar on this site. All complaining about sharp practise! When do we take them on and sort this out? I paid for my car hire 2/4/10. No problem with car hire 13/8 - 23/8. Marbenjo, Malaga airport. Car great. Staff helpful. The sting is now, 9/9/11 when Marbenjo e-m me to say they have not recieved payment from Suncar so have debited my credit card for payment. Well I don't think so baby puppy. You are messing with the wrong person. I have issue with Marbenjo thinking I will roll for this. They waited 4 months for the money not appearing so I take issue with that, but why are Suncar still able to sook people in? I have asked how many bookings are affected at Marbenjo. I suspect this is a huge problem. Forums like these are good for a rant, but meanwhile people are still booking, so time to sort out the root problem!
Mastercard are following this up, however advice from another forum suggests registering the complaint with "fraud alert". Might move things along to shut this company down. They also trade as Decode/Suncar/Rubbe
OTHER ADVICE I READ - REPORT YOUR EXPERIENCE TO WATCHDOG.
Total sham of a company.We were charged full amount for weeks car hire in Spain which we paid online by credit card.On arrival in Alicante we were asked to pay again and given a photo copied leaflet saying we would be refunded on our return to the UK.We returned to the Uk on July 21st,it is now Sept 8th and still no refund.Absolute joke of a company.I am now going to take this further,I have spoken to my solicitor and we shall be persuing fraud charges and contacting several media outlets to expose this company for what they are.DO NOT USE THESE JOKERS.

Share If anyone is thinking of using Sun Car for their carhire I would warn them not to.
When I made my booking I was surprised that I had to pay the full amount up-front, as, in my experience this is not usually the case. Six days before the hire period was due to start I had cause to cancel my booking. The website states that cancellations more than 24 hours before commencement will receive a full refund. Their terms & conditions state that this will happen within 30 working days. Their website says that they are a 24/7 company. I cancelled on 21 July and it is now 3 September. I am still waiting for my money. You do the maths. We are talking about more than £500. Some of my emails to them are ignored. Not one email to their complaints department has been responded to (not even an acknowledgement). When I get a reply all I get are excuses and promises that are not kept.
I have submitted a "customer testimonial" to their website but I bet they don't use it.
I repeat do NOT use SUN CAR.CO.UK.

I paid for car hire from suncars in May for the amount of £350.00, they sent me a voucher to confirm this, on arrival in Spain in august there was no car, so I went to another car hire company and they was kind enough to phone the car hire company for me, she told me he would come and meet me, so I waited 20 minutes he did meet me and told me he had cancelled the car hire 2 weeks previously, he said he had sent an e-mail to cancel all transactions, suncars had not paid him any money since April and owed his £5000.00 Euros, he had a list of all the people that was meant to get a car from him, which he had cancelled with suncars, I asked if he could give me a copy of the e-mail and he said he was not able to do this, so this left me without a car, he then said he would hire me a car for £397.00 if I wanted it, I said no thank you as I thought it might be a scam, I then went to Avis cars and hired car to continue my holiday, obviously this was not a nice experience.
when i got home i phoned my credit card company and they said i should try suncars first but will send me a claim form, after several e-mails back and forth to suncars complaints department still no refund i have now filled in claim form for the credit card company.
DONT USE SUNCARS/DECODE CAR HIRE THEY ARE RUBBISH
Booked a car in Portugal only to find out at the desk of the car hire company that Suncar has't paid them. I had to pay substancialy more than my prepaid voucher.
Contacted Suncar but they didn't want to know and "offered" my money back!
But I received nothing so far, my calls are constantly ignored.

As with everyone else who has reviewed SunCar.co.uk - I had my money taken from them, and received a car voucher, yet when I arrived at Alicante airport was told by the actual car hire company that they had not received their payment and I had to pay a 2nd time. Being 1am I felt no point in arguing and paid up.
If you have used SunCar.co.uk - email complaints@suncar.co.uk and threaten to call your credit card company and report them for fraud (which I did) - amazingly all their previous excuses for not being able to refund my money stopped and they paid me back within an hour.
DO NOT USE SunCar.co.uk !!!!

We arrived in Alicante on the 10th July 2010 with our prepaid voucher from Suncar. When we arrived at the car hire company that Suncar had booked we were told that we had to pay them & Suncar would refund us the money. I asked for proof of this & I was given an email from Suncar to say that they had made a mistake & would refund us the money. I rand Suncar when I got back home on the 17th July 2010 & they expected me to provide proof that I had paid twice even though they knew full well that I had. I told them it was there mistake & they should contact the car company direct. It is now the 10th August 2010 & I still have not received my refund. I think that Suncar make a business out of charging customers the money up front & accumulate this money in the bank for over 2 months in order to earn interest on this. While customers have to pay their credit card bill twice in order to not receive charges. TOTAL SCAM. WILL NOT BE USING THEM AGAIN WOULD RATHER GO DIRECT WITH THE CAR COMPANY
on arrival in kefelonia i was met suncars chosen company express car who told me i would have to pay again as they had not been payed by suncar of which i did.i rang suncar who said they would refund my money which they had for six weeks would be refunded that day.after several phone calls and a email saying they would refund myself three weeks after my holidays no refund has been payed.i have now put the matter with my credit card company to fight for me to get my money back.i strongly urge anyone not to use this company they do not keep to thier word mr g barton.
On arrival in Mexico we were met by the suncar chosen company. He had no idea about what insurance we had or cost of hire and demanded the remainder in cash plus a local tax, not credit card like we thought. We were given a car that had to be bump started! they assured us someone had left the aircon on and it would be ok. It wasn't and wouldn't start, luckily at the hotel. They gave us a new car but didn't refund the full tank of petrol we had put in the last one. They claimed we would be paid at the airport. At the airport the company were late to pick up the car which meant we nearly missed checkin! also no sign of refund for petrol. On arrival back home I emailed suncar who simply emailed me back some small print about having nothing to do with it! thanks suncar, maybe a few more reviews like these will put you in your place!!
Suncar are one carhire company I feel compelled to review. To say unacceptable is an understatement. To date I am still waiting for a refund for the booking I made 2 1/2 months ago. Suncar cancelled my booking themselves without any reason. There was no refund either made or offered, and after about a dozen emails, phonecalls, complaints, and promises to refund ''this week'', I am beginning to think I might never actually receive a refund at all. Please, if anyone is thinking of booking with this company, consider the fact that you might be the victim of fraud, like myself, and DON'T BOOK!!!.
