Overall, I have found good places to stay with Hostelworld -- easy booking, and good (and accurate) reviews.
However, I am very unhappy with my last Hostelworld experience, having bought the cancellation insurance to be able to have my deposit for a reservation refunded. However, when I had to cancel my reservation at the last minute due to a trip to the Emergency Room which caused a change in plans, I was told that I hadn't left enough time for the cancellation policy, and that I would not be getting my money back. Now, arguably, this was probably something that was in the fine print, but it still left me feeling like I had been taken advantage of. On top of that, the woman I spoke to on the phone was extremely unhelpful, simply repeating the same explanation over and over again in my attempt to discuss my predicament with her, and not being at all helpful when I asked to speak to someone senior.
Although I have been satisfied with Hostelworld otherwise, the experience will make me think twice about using them in the future.
