Picked up Fiat Panda from Europcar in La Spezia, Italy on the Friday at 12.00. Nice little car, easy to drive, clean and well prepared.
We needed to return it on the Monday morning in time to catch the 06.40 train from La Spezia train to Milan. The Europcar office doesn't open till 08.30, but we were advised to park the car in the parking area and leave the keys at a nearby bar, which opens at 06.00. However, when we arrived at 06.00 on the Monday, the bar was not open. We tried another bar along the road, which was open, but they refused to take the keys from us. There is no letters flap at the office. The bar was still not open at 06.15. So we took the keys with us to Milan, where we went immediately to the Europcar office and handed the keys in there.
The person behind the desk at the office said we had not fulfilled the contract and we could be charged for the rental until the keys got back to La Spezia, which might take two further days.
He may possibly have misunderstood what we told him. Our view is that the verbal contract was to park the car in the parking area and leave the keys at the bar, which would be open at 06.00 - but it was not open, nor had it opened by 06.15. We fulfilled our part of the contract to the best of our ability, and our view is that we should not be charged for rental beyond the agreed return time on the Monday morning.
