As a registrar we have two options when it comes to renewals, we can either set a default as "Auto renew" or "Auto expire". Having tried both options in the past e have found that auto renewal offers most protection for out customer, and prevents the loss of domain names which are required. We do send out several renewal reminders to inform customers that domain names will renew and these also give instructions on setting domain names to expire, which can be controlled through the control panel. Obviously we cannot control what happens to these email when they reach your email provider as this is completed out of our control. I can see that in this instance you have had a domain name renew which was not wanted, however I hope you can see why we do have auto renewal in place.
