Further edit: I said I'd add another star if the items were delivered as-described, and they were. I can't really fault this company except in their choice of payments provider. MoneyBookers are expensive and their charges are opaque. If SimplyElectronics would just stop using them, I'd have no hesitation in buying from them again.
This is the first time I have ever removed and replaced a review. I ordered a Canon EOS 650d from this company on 17/02/2013 and paid by debit card (my stupidity there) agreeing to pay 456.99. There was no indication that they were anything other than a reputable supplier other than the fact that their delivery window is 7-14 days. A few hours later, I received an email informing me of the amount that I had actually paid which was in US dollars, and when converted to Sterling was more than £30 over the price I'd agreed to pay.
I recognise that this isn't SimplyElectronics' fault, but they:
a. Should have warned customers that Moneybookers would charge them significantly more than the advertised price (I wasn't asked to confirm the updated price)
b. Are responsible for choosing their payment provider and therefore partly responsible for the effects its practices have on their customers.
I raised Ticket# LTK****597X asking them to cancel my order on the grounds that I hadn't agreed to pay the sum I was charged. Receiving no response, I called the telephone support line and was exposed to the most deceitful, prevaricating, unprofessional service I've experienced in quite some time. At the beginning of the call, I was assured that they 'Never used third parties' to take payments and that I had been charged exactly the sum I'd agreed to. By the end the SAME CSR was telling me that I'd have to contact Moneybookers to arrange a refund.
Eventually, I agreed to proceed with the order as long as they could dispatch this week. I have received notification that the item has been transferred to the courier. I can't complain about this: they did as they said they would.
I'll update this review again when I receive the item. If it's complete, suitable and as-described I'll add another star. If it isn't, I'll remove one.
SimplyElectronics: I don't think you're a dishonest company, but you do need to understand that doing business in Europe is not the same as doing business in Asia. Your prices are good (even with the MoneyBookers tax) and your customer services staff are friendly. although they are also evasive and clueless. All you have to do is stop scaring your customers and possibly shorten your supply chain and you'll rule the world.
I've ordered form them before and they seemed OK, but this time I've been waiting for a week and a half for my order. They emailed my to tell me that it was dispatched. I emailed them a couple of days ago to ask which postage method they used, as I hadn't received it yet and I've had no reply.
If this had been my first experience with this company, i'd be highly suspicious of their motives. As it is, I know they're honest, but I'm just a little disappointed.
EDIT: Recieved order very quickly after it was returned by the delivery company. I accept that this wasn't their fault and have accordingly increased the review score.
