I regularly order goods from the USA, not large amounts as I am not a company. The people who send these goods to me use DHL to ship them to me in the UK. The good part (one star) is that the parcels have always arrived and delivered by personable drivers, the absolutely awful and incomprehensible part is their method of collecting VAT. The truth is there is no method that I can fathom out and no way of establishing a system. I have: paid the driver, received an invoice, been phoned up to pay over the phone, opened an account at their request which they have never allowed me to use, been pursued by bad debt recovery companies when DHL did not either phone or invoice me about VAT on a parcel they delivered or even send me a reminder which would have alerted me to a charge I was ignorant of. The worst of this all is that you can never talk to anyone to sort any of this out. The only people I have ever talked to at DHL is a payment clerk. If I had a choice in this matter I would not use DHL but the suppliers I deal with only use them. They are big business of course and it makes sense for them but not for their small customers at the receiving end who are left at the mercy of an inconsistent and frankly frustrating service.
PS: written 24 hours after the above. This time I got an automated message which I had to listen to three times to make any sense of. This message told me to go to a website to pay... Problem was the waybill number was truncated in one part of the message and the website address was unclear. I had to spend 10 mins on the computer searching for the correct place to pay.
I received the two legs I ordered very quickly and was impressed with the quality and price of the product. These sturdy legs are just what I needed to put on my work table. And I was able to buy just two, where other website offered these as a set of four. I only needed two as the other end of my work table rests on a paper chest. Great solution to my particular problem. Thanks
The computer arrived very quickly and the instructions were easy to follow. I still have to get to grips with the computer so it is difficult to say much about it, but hopefully it will work out as good as the service.
