Need to implement a stock control/reservation system

I placed an order via telephone for 15 items aware that one of the items was out of stock: expected the following Monday.
By the time the item was back in stock, one of the other items was then out of stock, much to my surprise, as I assumed (wrongly) that all the other originally in stock items would have been marked as reserved.
I waited for the "2nd" item to be back in stock even though it's promised re-stock date came and went. I did eventually receive the complete order.
Credit to the customer services team, particularly Emma, who handled the issues as best they could but without a stock control/reservation system, their plight is somewhat compromised in this scenario.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience which you have suffered as a result of stock issues. The company currently has a stock holding of £6M but popular lines do go out of stock from time to time especially during busy periods. I have asked a Team Manager to investigate why you were not offered a part shipment on this occasion. I would like to thank you for your feedback which is extremely important in improving the service offered to our customers
