Paying more than double for a van seems very unfair!

I booked our transit van on the ferry which I use as a camper van to sleep in with my two kids. For some reason, even though I have no intention of using it for business purposes I have to pay freight prices. This means if you have a car you pay around 80 pounds - but its over two hundred for the van. Camper vans on the other hand, which are bigger than my van, cost the same as a car. I was told my van would need to be converted with a toilet and cooker to pay car prices - but if i do that then there's no space to sleep in it! Why don't they just check whether you're carrying freight - rather than two kids and some sleeping bags? Not fair.....
