Xmas eve notice was too late!

Overall I was fairly happy apart from one element - to receive an email on Xmas eve about an item ordered well before (after 3 chaser emails sent from myself), saying the item was out of stock so that part of my order would be cancelled. This, in my opinion, is out of order! 1 disappointed child and 2 disappointed parents on Xmas morning.
