confused by Chinese characters

Although I'm in an English speaking country the device (Samsung Note II) arrived with Chinese as the default language which made accessing the language selection nigh impossible. Phoning the NZ contact number was not any use as apparently I had to initiate action through an email for which there is up to 48 hour wait for a response.
