My wife had a bad experience booking the Ibis Manchester Hotel - she booked back in February. The email confirmation said nothing about there being no cancellation available - in fact it gave contact details for cancellation, but it did say that it was paid up front - not something she was contesting.
When she rang up to cancel today, the automated 'service' said she would get nothing back. When she rang 'customer support' they said it was on the information when she booked. But not before putting her on hold for ages before getting back and telling her, no - you can't have a refund. On a premium number, of course. I checked today by going through the booking center for a date several months in advance - there's nothing to say this when you go through the booking process on the web site. The T&Cs just say that the cancellation policy can be different for each company you book with.
The person on the end of the phone sounded Dutch. I really don't want to believe that all Dutch businesses are out to scam, so please don't add fuel to flames.
