DPD have wasted an entire saturday morning of mine messing me about. The information provided beforehand was great, telling me which hour delivery slot to expect it in (8:55-9:55) and also a live tracking map of the driver. Great.
I watched as it came round to my turn, and then suddenly it changed to 'Nobody present, unable to deliver'. Turns out, as I live in a block of flats which has a security gate for vehicles/pedestrians at the front, the driver had seen the gate, thrown a calling card at it and then driven straight off. Not only did he not bother to even attempt to find a contact number for me (which DPD had, and I was at my flat waiting 300 yards away), but the card was either stolen before I found it or the wind blew it away, because there was no sign of it.
Within 15 minutes I rang DPD Smethwick in order to ask them to send the driver back, but was told he would only be able to do so at the end of his round and I should expect it between 12:00-12:30. So I waited until 12:45 and then rang again. This time I was told that they couldn't get in touch with the driver but he appeared to be heading in the wrong direction. Would it likely be delivered today? No. Can I ring back in 30 minutes and see if you've managed to get in touch with him? Sure!
Didn't mention that the depot closed at 1 PM of course, so it was nice to be lied to twice in one day. Other suggestions included rearranging the delivery date (I'm at work during the week), dropping it in a 'safe place' (because somewhere outside a public gate is going to be very safe) or collecting it from the depot myself. Sort of defeats the point of paying extra for Saturday delivery doesn't it?
I can't wait for the struggle that will come with getting the parcel myself without a calling card, and I hope that someone doesn't find and steal it before Monday!
