Dear oh dear, oh dear.
Bought a Hoover vacuum cleaner from Curry's six weeks ago. It stopped working today.
Brought it back in the very misguided hope of receiving a replacement or a refund, which apparently I am entitled to according to the sale of goods act.
I was unreliable informed by the manager that they would need to speak to the manufacturers who were uncontactable, what with it being a Sunday and everything, they are actually available 10-4pm on Sundays.
I pointed out that the sales contract was between myself, the consumer, and Curry's, the retailer and that any involvement with the manufacturer was not my concern and the issue would easily be settled by providing me with the desired replacement or refund as is my right under the Sale of Goods Act.
I was then told this was not going to happen. I asked if I could have this in writing and was refused, I then asked if the manager minded committing this denial to video, again a refusal, at which point I was asked to leave the store, which I refused. The next step in this delicate negotiation was for the manager to contact the police in order to have me removed/ arrested. I followed the manager through the store recording him on my phone as he was calling the police while I simply asked for a refund or replacement.
Following a brief chat with a boorish West Midlands Police Officer on the phone it seemed my options were now limited to either being denied my rights in the store and being arrested for breach of the peace or leaving w ith no refund, replacement or vacuum cleaner but with my liberty intact while the helpful Curry's manager liased with the manufacturer at some point in the near future.
I decided that the remainder of my Sunday afternoon would best be spent not incarcerated and so I left.
I am absolutely staggered at the treatment received by Curry's, the attitude of the police and the fact that even though there is a law in place to protect my rights as a consumer, it may as we'll not exist.
Where do I go from here?
Back home to my grubby carpet I imagine.
I will not be shopping at Curry's or PC World anytime soon.
